Nov 11, 2022, 2:26 PM

I’m in no way jumping on your post because you mentioned the portal BUT…

Everyone should stop acting like the Portal is a guarantee. Dabo went after 2 O-lineman this past off season, both turned down Clemson’s offer.

In today’s NCAA, you have NIL $ that’s a huge factor and the other is playing time. If it’s a grad transfer or even an underclassman, they are transferring to play. Dabo is loyal to his recruits, so if it’s a level evaluation, you can best believe his own recruit is getting the nod. I’m sure this perception is out there with potential transfer players. Now I don’t want to make a blanket statement for all but I guess you just have to find the ones that fit your program similar to HS recruits.

My guess is Dabo’s message to 17-18 year old recruits and parents resonates differently than a transfer who is trying to get game film to get to the next level. If Dabo isn’t promising playing time, I’ll say it’s going to be difficult to sway some of these top recruits. I don’t want to talk trash about transfers but if they are transferring due to playing time at their previous program my guess is they likely don’t want to get into a position battle at the new school where it’s clear they need to be head and shoulders over the incumbent.

I hate we missed on the center who came out of UVA and ended up at Michigan. That guy is an absolute stud and would have been a difference-maker for us.

Who will pass the ball to them? We could have 20

Nov 11, 2022, 3:08 PM [ in reply to WR WR WR ]

top flight receivers, and we still have a broken QB who can't get it to them.

Fix the QB. Then let's see how WRs look.

Good question..

Nov 11, 2022, 2:55 PM

Let's pretend you can get 4, and all are 5 stars (and good kids).

1 has to be Offense, 1 has to be Defense, 1 has to be Special Teams and you 4th can be whoever you'd like. Lastly, all players only have 1 year of eligibility left.

I'd go: WR, DE, Kicker and then a corner.

MY reasoning...

WR - We need someone a game breaker at WR. I think Antonio Williams and Adam Randall and Beaux Collins can be a really solid line up next year, but have to take a chance on someone to stretch the field.

DE - Going to lose a lot of depth & talent. Need it here, just a little more than DT.

Kicker - Can never go wrong have a solid kicker. BT is gone, and Gunn hasn't got any playing time.

Corner - I think we lack talent and experience here. Unlike WR where I think some of our issues are coaching/scheme, I think we have great coaching but don't have a true lockdown corner to take away 1 half the field and who can also be a force in run support.

So y'all think we should bench starters to bring in guys

Nov 11, 2022, 3:06 PM

that another team didn't want? There are over 2000 kids in the portal. You can count on one hand guys who actually impacted an established program.

So who do we sit do we bench? Transfer guys don't transfer for depth. And like someone else said, they're not the magic sauce for winning football. It hasn't elevated ANY program to the level we're wanting to go back to.

Again, until we fix the elephant in the room, there are no magic playcalls or portal players to "fix" it (8-1, #10).

You must have a lot of fingers on your one hand

I was born with 6 digits on my right hand.

Nov 11, 2022, 3:19 PM

Can you fill it up with portal players who've helped someone become elite?

And yeah, Joe Burrow and Justin Fields were transfers. But they filled a desperate need. If there's a Joe or Justin sitting out there, let's see if we can get him, right? So we'll just tell Cade and Vizzinza, sorry but not sorry.

Of the 2000 guys in the portal every year, who are all the guys who've come in and started then elevated their new team to a new level?

What positions would you bench for an unknown guy (who couldn't cut it at his last program), guaranteeing him a starting position?

If the portal was magic, then 2000 magic players should be making dozens of teams capable of winning national championships.

Transfers that are difference makers are all over the place.

Off the top of my head....Tennessee, Oregon, Alabama, Southern Cal, Texas, Kansas State, etc. come to mind as having impact transfers. With a little research, I could come up with many more current ones, not to mention the ones that helped Bama, OSU, UGA and LSU in recent years.

Of course, there is a ton of dead wood in the portal as well. It's on Danny Pearman and Dabo to find us a couple of diamonds in the rough if they decide to change.

Who should Dabo cut from their scholarship to make room on the roster for these?

The assistant/position coaches portal is most desperate need to be hit.
