Not so much the OP.

I don't think we're anywhere close to that yet.

Nov 7, 2021, 7:43 PM

It's been ugly, for sure. Multiple causes, I think; some are obvious, some are real head-scratchers. Dabo's formula works, and it works extremely well. We might need some changes, and if we do, I trust we'll get them. Either way, instead of getting left behind, we will "adapt" and I think we'll be right back in the mix next year or year after.

If QB shakes itself out

Nov 7, 2021, 7:52 PM

whether through the light really coming on for DJ, Klubnick, or a quality transfer, we're back next year.

Defense will be salty again. All these young guys playing on the OL will reap benefits. RB looks outstanding. WR with Ngata, the Collins duo coming on, healthy Williams and Spector and incoming freshmen and redshirts should all improve greatly.

I can't wait to see Simpson and Barrett on the field at the same time at LB. Bentley in the middle. DL out of this world again. All the DB's getting snaps taking those next steps.

Oversigning

Nov 7, 2021, 7:58 PM

I'm not sure I understand why you would want to over-sign a class.

Re: Oversigning

Nov 7, 2021, 8:30 PM

The only merit that I see from an over-sign class is that, if indeed we can get the recruits that we want, then Dabo and Venables can 'give up' their son(s) being on scholarship. To my understanding, this can be done (and may already be part of the plan).

For that matter, this may already be in the coaches plan. They offer scholarships to walk-ons when, after the signing day is over and before -&/or- soon after the season starts and there has been attrition from among the scholarship players, they then award some of the walk-ons with a scholarship as a sign of encouragement for more talented HS players to walk on at Clemson.

One problem of over-signing is that of 'recruiting promises' to high priority recruits. For example, Clemson did not offer Trenton Simpson until late ... i.e., after the coaches top priority recruit from California signed elsewhere. The presumption here (and yeah year I know, to presume is similar to assume, except that to presume is for pr_ _ s) is that Clemson coaches promised the OLB from California that he would be the only high profile recruit for that position.

If Clemson coaches break those recruiting promises, then the 'deceived' high profile recruit can immediately enter the portal and vamoose.

So in summary, over-signing can both feed the program and bite the program.

True, but

Nov 7, 2021, 8:07 PM [ in reply to If QB shakes itself out ]

I felt the same way about this year. In fact, like almost everybody, I thought we'd be a top 4 team. I don't underestimate the role injuries have played, and I think DJ's got some things going on aside from football that may have affected his play. Also the O-line ... but still, something has been off from the start this year, and I don't know what it is. We may never know, but I think it's more than those things I mentioned. Still, Dabo has proven himself, beyond all doubt. As far as players next year, I think you are spot on. We should be strong. The light could come back on for DJ, Klubnick could be a stud, and the O-line should be improved. Most of our best players are young and will be back. I'm with you, and while I've been extremely frustrated and critical this year, I'm not losing my mind or bailing on anything. We'll be back.

There have been many issues

Nov 7, 2021, 8:42 PM

But if QB play had just been what it was yesterday all year, we're likely 9-0, even with all the other issues. QB is what makes our offense go.

That's what definitely wasn't right to begin the year. It isn't where we're used to now, but it's much better than State or Syracuse. Let's hope DJ closes strong and makes the strides he needs to going in to more development in the off season. Guys develop at different rates. If he doesn't, we'll have options next year at least. I do think we could see a QB transfer in to actually compete depending on how DJ finishes

I think Dabo is going to have to use the portal. The portal when used properly will on essence give you a pile of extra scholarships.

He will use it selectively

but never wholesale

I heard someone (maybe Andy Staples) discussing Clemson and the portal, and he raised a great point that we might have tried finding a center or slot receiver this year.

With that said, I'm excited with the way Collins played in the slot last night.

Problem is the portal and transfer rule is just really getting up and going as of the last couple of years. Dabo’s recruiting philosophy while admirable has become antiquated quickly.

We need to adjust for the 2 to 4 players that will transfer out.

This is not new and many of us I brought this up plenty of times over the last 5 years. It is catching up with us for sure and does have to change in the world of the current transfer rules.
