The left leaners I know, many in my family, won't listen to

this. You can quote the actual numbers, they just don't hear it. These are otherwise smart people, some very successful in their professions. I conclude that it is ideological, that in the early days of it when it was made a partisan political issue, people adopted a certain view of it for those reasons and therefore now can't turn loose of it when the facts show otherwise. That covid is dangerous to 25 years olds and 12 year olds is an ideological view, not factual. Maher's audience is who holds that view, and after they see that clip they will continue to believe it.

sees Covid primarily through a political/idealogical lens. It is flat-out impossible. They selectively use medical information that supports their view while ignoring any which does not. They also are quick to put total faith in anything that supports their view, no matter how unreliable or uncertain the source. It doesn't matter if they are dem or pub, left or right, they are all equally crazy when it comes to covid.

I wrote off Maher decades ago as a hack.

Credit where due he has refined his approach considerably since then, but he has still been painfully partisan so I never bothered with him.
I think Balm is probably right and this is probably a man shifting tone to capture a different audience, recognizing that the lefty politico-comedian market is saturated now that the major network Late Night Shows have gone full partisan. But if it is just that, it is well played. That man sounds like a Liberal realizing that a lot of what he believed is absurd. Everything he said sounded like a conservative with the obligatory vague references to Trump’s incompetence or cheap lie about Trump saying to drink bleach...you know, just so he doesn't freak out his old friends.

Re: Bill Maher is slowly moving right

HBO recently got bought by AT&T from Time Warner, I am not sure if that has anything to do here, cause he's also his own producer and makes HBO a shitton of cash.. When he was in Covid land, broadcasting out of his mancave, it was the same Maher, but since he has been back in the studio his show has taken on a bit more inclusive posture with regard to NOT unmercifully stomping the dogshi>t out of every conservative idea that gets floated across his panel. So yeah, he seems to have "evolved" some.
And you can not confuse the content of a show with the personal beliefs of the host, I can assure you the two are in no way connected when money is being made, it is a job like anything else. You would be surprised to learn that there are a large number of liberal journalists at Fox just doing their job because they happen to also pay the best. Bill Maher's beliefs did not all of a sudden change at the ripe age of 60, so do not get all giddy over the thought that he is slowly converting into one of yours, 'cause that ain't what's happening here. he is widening his audience to boost ratings, and from what I have read doing a pretty good job at it.

I don't know that Maher is "moving" at all.

He just happens to see certain issues, for whatever reason, from what many would consider a "right-leaning" perspective. He always has. I think the fact that he's not totally committed to defending the liberal/leftist position straight down the line in The Jounge probably gives him the flexibility to maintain some degree of objectivity, integrity, and open-mindeness that is beyond the grasp of many in here.

i have been watching him religiously for almost two decades, how much you wanna bet he does not invite Robert Reiner, ND Tyson, or Barney Frank on his show any time soon, cause they were mainstays in the past. it seems to me he is pandering to a wider audience now.

Leftism is related to communism, socialism, and collectivism. Liberalism is related to individual freedom and individual rights. This is not any sort of new terminology.

Bill Maher has never had a problem with independent thinking. I've been watching him since the old days of Politically Incorrect on ABC in the 90s.

Yup. Actually the main change I saw was when he went from calling himself a libertarian to calling himself a liberal. But he has never been far left on most issues, and hasn't changed very much on policy over the years.

He's not the smartest or the funniest, but he sure thinks he is. I always felt like he was the '######' Jon Stewart.

He’s a lot more left leaning than I am, but I admire the fact that no matter which way you lean ideologically, you’re going to get pissssed off sooner or later watching his show.
He’s a left leaning yin to Dennis Miller’s right leaning yang.

I think both really want to come off as the smartest guy in the room and aggressively try to prove it. That's different than Stewart. Stewart likes to play down his intelligence in his comedy but if you watched his interviews, he was clearly a very knowledgeable person on the issues and his guest's positions. That's the opposite of Maher and Miller.
Maher has a position and is aggressive, but rarely do I think he's incredibly well-informed. I do like his show from time to time because sometimes it's fun to watch him be a d1ck to people but that's also why I can't watch him long-term.

He is right on some things and then blatantly lied about some things too.
One lie being that Trump told his supporters to inject household disinfectant.

No, Trump only asked, during a press conference in front of all of America, whether injecting a disinfectant would work. At worst he was only suggesting the idea. Of injecting bleach.
