I hope it works out with BB...

but of the options here, two show a progression and one does not.

1: Purnell
2: Brownell
3: Gregg Marshall or Richard Pitino?

There's something in these hills.

Well, if you could still get in the NIT at 16-15(5-11)

Mar 25, 2015, 10:41 AM

we'd have 2 more NIT appearances under Brownell. Since he had 1-2 more years anyway, I'll withhold judgment until then in regards to who I'd want compared to OP. Marshall is in a different league than both at this point

I agree with your Marshall assement

Mar 25, 2015, 10:48 AM [ in reply to Well, if you could still get in the NIT at 16-15(5-11) ]

He is head and shoulders above both OP and BB.

Fine put two more NITs in Brownell's list. Is it really impressive? Can you see a building sequence?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I see a rebuilding short circuited by losing

Mar 25, 2015, 10:53 AM

your best player by far unexpectadly. I see a huge jump from 13-18 to 23-13 that losing KJ derailed. Now that Brownell actually returns his best and most talented players for the first time in his tenure, let's see how he does the next 1-2 years

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Losing 1 player equals a drop of 7 wins?

Mar 25, 2015, 10:57 AM

Or maybe is it the loss of KJ plus losing TJ Sapp and Flier to transfers?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And even with KJ we couldn't get in the NCAA? Sad***

Clemson does not lose players to the NBA early

Mar 25, 2015, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Losing 1 player equals a drop of 7 wins? ]

4 times in our history. If OP had lost Trevor or KC Rivers early would he have had the same success that next year? Sapp had a nice career in the OVC. Big whoop. Filer may at Florida International. This will mean what? Neither will play in the NBA. KJ was the centerpiece and was gone with no warning. Clemson at this point or any point in its history cannot sustain that the next year. One day maybe, but never at any point in our history. The 85-86 team lost Hrayson Marshall for the ACC and NCAA tourneys and went 0-2 with Horace Grant. Marshall returned and Grant left the following year and we dropped big time. Why? Best player was no longer there. Even with Dale Davis in 91-92 we couldn't sustain the loss of Campbell. That's Clemson basketball to the very present

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

KC Rivers never played in the NBA

Mar 25, 2015, 11:35 AM

and that's the point. If Trevor had left early, the cupboard is not completely bear. We would have been an NIT team at worse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They were the best players

Mar 25, 2015, 11:41 AM

Take them away without warning and we struggle. Between Sykes, Grant as a junior and Bobo you honestly believe we have any post game that year? And again, ACC teams made the NIT with 5-11 league records back then. It's different today with the NITA taking all conference regular season champs that don't make the dance. In OPs tenure we make the NIT this year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Losing both of them yes that would have been a stuggle

Mar 25, 2015, 11:46 AM

but if we only lose one of KC or Trevor, then I have no doubt we would have made the NIT at worse. Even the "harder" NIT of these days.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who is our post presence without Trevor?

Mar 25, 2015, 11:56 AM

When in our history have we lost our best player without a viable replacement and not struggled the next year? Let alone unexpectadly

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

KJ wasnt the center piece, he was the ONLY piece...

Mar 25, 2015, 12:30 PM [ in reply to Clemson does not lose players to the NBA early ]

Take him off that team and we are just what we are this year...even when he came out the game the team looked absolutely lost. To me that has nothing to do with great coaching its just having a great player, that was by NO means a good team we just had one unbelievably talented player to put the team on his back and take us as far as we did, I mean h3LL we didn't even make the tourney with arguably one of the best players we have ever had at Clemson.

Not sure where I stand on Brownell. I know he's a great "x's and o's" guy, as they say. But wonder about his recruiting, the really good recruits he gets are either hurt their first 2 years or they transfer. I guess I'm on board with him about if a player doesn't get on board or is unhappy, he tells them they can leave, but it sure happens a lot. I'd just like to see one of his recruits come in and play really well their first year.

When that one player is an NBA caliber player at a place like Clemson yes.

Also we are not getting Marshall that is a pipe dream.

Brownell is here for two more years regardless of any of this.

Quality rebuttal. I have no other screen names. I also dont have an 8 year gap in time from my join date until I was an active poster.

Re: You Decide

Mar 25, 2015, 1:01 PM

I notice there wasn't a list for OP while at DePaul. Is that not relevant? OP didn't have to contend with Louisville, Syracuse, or Notre Dame plus Duke and UNC either when at Clemson. Nor did Marshall. Factor in major health issues for 4 of his recruits and BB has a tough hole to dig is out of.

I'm not making excuses, but if you want to make a comparison let's consider all the facts. I think folks are really overreacting when we worry about guys averaging 3 pts. a game leaving the program. They're not getting PT for a reason. If they were that good why wouldn't BB start them? Does he have a death wish?

IMO it's too soon to make a decision on BB. Am I satisfied? No. But a good chance we'll be better in the next 2 years from where we are than starting over. I agree Marshall is the best of the 3, but don't ever see him as a candidate for the job. If OP was that good, he would have turned around DePaul.
