Waste of time unless our team and every team we played had exactly the same players as before.

While interesting, this also doesn't take into account the team that was inherited. Venables inherited a terrible defense. Goodwin inherited a consistently great defense. Interesting numbers, but they don't mean much without context.

There is not much to take from the comparison aspect of this image.
On the other hand, just looking at Goodwin's numbers, if we can keep our averages allowing below 20 ppg, 100 rushing ypg, and less than 3 yards per rush then I think we will have a lot to like about our record at the end of the season.
This weekend we find out if FSU found a weakness in the run defense or if that game is going to be an outlier.

It was 34-14 with 9 mins to go in the game.

I think our guys started playing the scoreboard at that point instead of playing with physicality. Up 20 with 9 mins to go preaches we had the game in control.
One would have only thought the offense would have came back out and out the nail in the coffin. That didn’t happen and that gave FSU a sense of they are still in it. They came back out and took advantage of us playing vanilla football.
I believe we will see a defense like we saw against NCSU tomorrow and the offense will be hitting all 8 cylinders.

I hope you are right, but FSU has success running the ball early and late in the game.
They went away from what was working in the 3rd quarter because they panicked a little.
Once they decided to use the running game again despite it keeping the clock running is when they started to have success again.

They only ran 4 times with a running back for 28 yards the entire second half. Seeing as the averaged 137 yards on 18 carries. That means they had 109 yards on 14 carries (avg 7.7 yards/carry) in the first half and 7 yards/carry in the second half.
Travis ran 6 times for 35 yards in the second half for 5.83 yards per carry, the first half he ran 8 times for 29 yards for 3.63 yards/carry.
So together they ran 10 times for 63 yards in the second half (6.3 yards/ carry) compared to 24 times for 138 yards (6.27 yards per carry).
So statistically we played equally bad against the run half to half.

Apples to Oranges comparison. Weslichik is getting to start out with Venables recruits mostly, while Venables had to start out with leftovers that had just given up 70 points in an Orange Bowl. Given that, that 6-1 start is pretty danged impressive! But, on the other hoof, hard to argue with 7-0 start for Goodwin.

Not getting into the “comparison” debate because it’s way too complicated, but there is no way to argue that there was not a ton of defensive talent on campus for BV to work with.

You look at that list and say "How in the world did 70-33

would not be particularly impressive either.
I guess I’m just saying that overall when BV came on board the cupboard was far from bare. But, the defense had just suffered a monumental melt down on national TV.
There was a lot of talent and several future stars already here.
To his credit, he whipped those future stars into shape.

The accurate comparison will be the 4th year results when he is playing with his recruits.

Maybe a more useful comparison would be venables' defense last year against Goodwin's defense this year? At least we could see if Goodwin is carrying on the tradition or whether he is coming up a little short (no pun, really). Any takers for the task?
