Let's see where we stand. If Clemson is one and done in the tournament (assuming we make it). Should Brad Brownell be fired?

It’s almost like a good coach improves his team as the season goes. NC State returned 40% of their offense from last year. Took the team a little while to find their footing. Clemson returned over 60% of their offense while adding a 5 year senior 3 point specialist to fill the gap. They were ready to play out of the box and failed to grow as a team over the season. Which is why teams that were demonstrably lesser than them in the first half of the year were able to be competitive and/or win as the season wore on.

Plenty of good coaches out there. I don't understand why people throw out "well who would you hire?" rhetorically like it's an argument ender. There are any number of coaches Clemson could hire that would be better -- and to the oft-argued point that "there's no guarantee they'll be better," well...yeah. It's a risk. But if we go one-and-done in both tourneys and lose 4 of 5 down the stretch of what was allegedly going to be a "special" season, then it's a risk worth taking. I am mad at myself that I let myself believe this would be any different.

Amir Abdur-Rahim - South Florida HC. Successfully turned around Kennesaw State and took them to the NCAAT. Won the conference tournament in his first season at South Florida. He is a young coach (early 40s) and is from Atlanta. I think he'd be a natural fit, and I think he'd take the job if offered.

Will Wade - he wins. I don't like him and he is kind of a d-bag, but he's a Clemson man, he would win games, and what he did at LSU is perfectly legal now. He would take the job if offered.

Jerome Tang - Kansas State. Kansas State has way more basketball history than we do, but that job is probably not as good in the era of NIL and there have been questions about how happy he is there. Worth a call.

Pat Kelsey - CofC. I think everyone on this board knows plenty about Coach Kelsey, but he would bring an exciting brand of basketball to Littlejohn. He has extensive experience recruiting in the ACC from his Wake Forest assistant days, and I think he'd bring a lot of energy to the program.

Dustin Kerns - App State - Clemson grad, having an incredible year at App State. Young, energetic -- he'd be a bit of a risk, but he's due for a big job.

These are all good coaches and other than maybe Tang, all people I think would say yes if offered.

Regardless, I hope we go on a deep run and none of this is necessary. But if it does become necessary, "who are we gonna get?" is not an issue if we want to make a change.

Per sports-reference.com

Everyone of those coaches performed more poorly than Brad Brownell.

SRS NET RPI Coach School NCAA
14.91 35 35 Brad Brownell Clemson 6th seed
06.42 72 54 Dustin Kerns App State N/A
04.19 97 60 Pat Kelsey CofC 13th seed
11.83 70 87 Jerome Tang Kansas St N/A
07.16 56 47 Will Wade McNeese St 12th seed
07.39 78 48 Amir Abdur-Rahim S Florida N/A

The only proven coach is Will Wade, but a cheater and liar is exactly the type of coach we do not want at Clemson.

I do not understand why people cannot see we have a really good coach that continues to improve. Unless we are going after a proven winner that can overcome the perceived image that Clemson will always be stuck behind the tobacco road blue bloods in recruiting, refereeing, and polling we will have to take the persistent route to change that image.

Unfortunately, he doesnt continue to improve.

Clemson isn’t going to hire a Muslim coach. Definitely not for men’s basketball. So you can eliminate Abdur-Rahim.

Wade has a history of cheating. Big time cheating. We won’t even consider him.

Kelsey and Kerns would be the most likely from your list.

I found someone else who just got the Brad Brownell treatment from last year:

Rick Pitino at St Johns.

NET of 32, which is better than Clemson's current of 35. However, their RPI is 71 and Clemson's is 35. They have 4 Q1 wins and are 10-12 in Q1/Q2. I personally like SOR, which is 45 so not great, but their predictive numbers are BPI 24 and KenPom 25, which are really good. Looking like they got hot near the end, but they look at the whole body of work.

With that said, if we were to get a questionable coach like Will Wade, why not Rick Pitino (my vote is still Brad Brownell)? Just interested in everyone else's thoughts about Rick Pitino. Not sure if he was directly involved in the scandal and don't feel like researching it.

Thoughts?

Yep, all we need is a new coach. Our players are of the same caliber as the teams that usually win the ACCT, but coaching doesn't get the best from them. Ours just turn down the chance to play at the next level for business opportunities instead.

here's my honest take on it

2

Compared to the general TNET population, I generally side with the "Brownell defenders," though I have criticized him before in certain situations. If the Tigers were to lose their first game in the tournament, which would mean failing to win a single game in either the ACC tournament or the NCAA tournament, I would consider that to be a disappointing end to the season. I generally believe in having realistic expectations in sports, which means hoping to see progress made in small, reasonable steps. Knowing Clemson's recent basketball history, I think most of us would agree that the first step the Tigers need to take going forward is to be able to make the tournament consistently. I think if someone had told us before the season that the Tigers would make the NCAA tournament, especially as a 6-seed, almost all of us would've gladly taken that. However, as many of you have pointed out, expectations can and should be adjusted based on a team's performance during the course of a season, and I think most of us would agree that Clemson has shown a much greater potential this year (emphasis on potential) than merely qualifying for the tournament.

If Clemson loses its first game against the lower-seeded New Mexico, I think that a conversation about Brownell's future would at least be warranted. For me personally, I wouldn't be adamant that he should be fired, but I know plenty of others would be. I think I'd be pretty much neutral about it, but I believe there would be a fair debate to be had if Clemson goes one-and-done, with legitimate arguments for both keeping Brad and for moving in a different direction. For one, the end of this season would mark a natural transition period with both Hall and Girard departing and most of the returning players being underclassmen. Neff has also shown recently that he has a pretty quick trigger finger when it comes to making coaching changes, so I wouldn't be shocked if Brad was dismissed if Clemson loses game 1.

If Clemson beats New Mexico, I don't think Brownell should be fired. At that point, Clemson would be advancing to play against opponents seeded higher than themselves (barring upsets.) If the Tigers manage to go on a deeper run, great, but I don't think that it would be reasonable to view that as a minimum expectation yet. Again, the current focus for Clemson should be on making the tournament consistently and beating the teams seeded beneath them. If Clemson beats New Mexico and then loses its next game in the round of 32, I wouldn't be ecstatic, but I'd feel pretty much neutral about the ending of the season. I think making the second round would be right about on par with fair expectations. I think a sweet 16 appearance should definitely be viewed as a positive result for this team, and I'd certainly feel good about Clemson's overall season and tournament if the Tigers can win 2 games to get there. Anything beyond that, meaning elite 8 or better, and we should all be elated. So there, that's my breakdown of what I think reasonable expectations and reactions should be based on different possible tournament outcomes for Clemson.

I am right there with you.

I do not have a problem with replacing Brad with a proven winner if that is what Neff wants to do. What I have a problem with is replacing a coach that IS making slow improvements with another mid-level coach HOPING we get someone who can take us to the top immediately. Don't get me wrong, I would love that as well as hitting the lottery, but why risk it when we have someone making progress. Yes, its slow, but its progress.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How much longer do we keep going with slow progress?

Mar 18, 2024, 4:30 PM

At what point does it end? If he stays this year due to making the tournament, then what are the expectations next year? Do we look to have a team that can improve on this year's team after losing Hall and Girard, Clark and maybe others? (not sure who has covid years or redshirts)

If we don't make the tournament next year is it bc of rebuilding? At what point does the cycle end and we try something new?

Unfortunately, this year's team is exactly where we were 14 years ago when Brad started in terms of overall and league record, ACCT seeding (both 6th and one-and-done), and an NCAA appearance (7-seed in 2010 vs 6-seed this season). We do have the added misfortune of being down a few thousand fans per game on average though. None of this equals progress, though, even slow. We haven't moved the needle an inch over this entire tenure as far as results and competitiveness are concerned, we spent $65 Million on facility upgrades midway through, and thousands less in attendance per game than when he took over.
