SEC Hate

Was flipping channels yesterday after the Open was over and came across "Saturdays in the South: SEC Football History." As a huge college football fan and history buff, I ended up watching a couple of segments. It got me to thinking, "when did I start hating the SEC?" Growing up in the 70's and attending my first Clemson game in 74, there were only 2 teams I despised, UGA and Coots.
UGA was a great rivalry in the 70's and 80's going back and forth with most games decided by 3 points or less. But I did not "hate" the SEC, just UGA. After the probation ordeal, I also began to despise UNC and NC State. During the 80's I "hated" the ACC, not the SEC. I don't think I started hating the SEC until the coots joined the league and constantly blowing the SEC trumpet.
On side note, I was listening to Bill Curry's comments (referring to Alabama) about why the southern male is so passionate about football, it got me thinking what a paradox it is that ESPN has hitched it wagon to the SEC. ESPN is such a purveyor of performative wokeness, yet it's cash cow is a league that is comprised of solid red states with its strong southern heritage. Guess their principles only go so far when it comes to making a buck.

showing more disdain for the SEC when ESPN started shoving the conference down our throats. When every good unit or player we had would be described as "SEC-level", it became unbearable.

interesting perspective & insight on your part too..
that a left-leaning sports organization hitched its survival & growth to such a deep South sports league, but one made up primarily of Red States filled with good-hearted & patriotic Goobers who love football, a sport of violence & unique skill sets.

SCar joined them and started blabbing about how much better they thought they were after joining. That started the strong dislike for the SEC for me.

Likewise, I can't say that I have any real animosity towards the SEC, but there are certain fanbases that I detest, based on personal interactions!
That said, I do not have any article of clothing bearing ACC either.

I’m with you there. I would pull for just about any SEC team other than SC against ND or Ocry0 ST or just about any BiG 10 team. If SC plays them I just don’t watch. I was a big Bear Bryant fan as a kid. Maybe because they were always on TV and I had not yet discovered Clemson. To this day I like Alabama - maybe my second favorite team. I don’t like SC and GA fans running around chanting SEC and riding their coattails.

My dislike was when USC joined and their fans hitched their wagon to each SEC win. When LSU beats us in NCG many SC fans were shouting we won, we won. As for ESPN, yes they are woke, but what they really care about is making money. That is why they are in business.

There's a host of SEC teams that I never cared for, Bama and UGA at the top of the list, but I didn't really start hating the conference as a whole until SCar joined and started using it as a weapon. Even when they were getting beat down with lopsided scores like 63-7 at home (vs Florida, 1995) they would still crow about how good they were because of how good their competition was. It got old FAST.
