UGA excuse making begins already?
Aug 9, 2013, 10:46 AM
|
|
This was sent to me by someone who lives in Macon and has two kids at UGA. He says that some of his friends who are diehard Dawg fans will quietly admit to him that they worry about not only Clemson but also SCar the following game. Even a few dread the possibility of starting 0-2 given that the defense is perfectly unknown and going up against Clemson's and SCar's mostly seasoned and powerful offenses.
He sent me this article because it matches what he is hearing from his friends. Already they are making excuses about their defense, even though this article is pretty much factually accurate. But the excuse goes something like: "It takes time to develop players under Grantham's plan..." They might be right, too!!

You should see is when we don't have to start our backup qb and 3rd string tailback.

Thompson and Connor Shaw were basically co-starters by the end of the season.
I think Kenny Miles was very underrated, and I think he was BETTER than Lattimore.

Kenny Miles was one of the worst starting RBs in the conference last year. He averaged 3.45 yards per carry. That's just downright awful.

His Freshman season he was very solid. Then Lattimore showed up. When Lattimore got hurt his sophomore season, Miles showed he was still very good.

A descent FR year doesn't make a player "good"

if he is unable to follow it up when he is truly needed as a SR.
Against all opponents his SR year, he averaged 3.45 ypc, but if you take a closer look most of that production came against a FCS school in Wofford. His carries against all FBS opponents only averaged 3.01 yards per touch. Sorry, but that is just not getting it done period.

I think the point is SCar is not an FCS team
Aug 9, 2013, 11:07 AM
[ in reply to SCar has a powerful offense? ] |

and the defense has to start out playing two strong offenses, one explosive - Clemson - and one at least in the middle of the pack for the SEC. SCar is stronger compared to say Kentucky, Tennessee, or Vanderbilt within their division.

At least in the circles my friend touches in Macon and middle/south GA he is hearing a lot of concern about the defense having to be tested by a known explosive offense and a respectable SEC offense in SCar two weeks in a row. The excuse seems pretty common to me - mostly new guys coupled with a DC with 'complex' (pick your favorite word) strategies and game plans. But already the chatter is pretty high, according to him.
For what it's worth, he is a real estate attorney with an Auburn degree and Mercer law degree, and two kids at UGA as I mentioned. He is an SEC fan overall. And his practice covers territory from Macon south, where he tells me about 90% of his clients who are into college ball are Dawgs. So I trust his observations.
Both sides admit their weakness. But my friend believes there are lower expectations from some of the Dawg faitful. At least in his world.

starting the season with a lot of questions on defense and going on the road to play the #8 team in the country that has had months for its stellar offense to prepare just for UGA. Then they go back to Athens to take on the #7 team in the country that destroyed them last year.
It's not excuse making. It's a tough spot. There's a reasonable chance that they'll start the season 0-2.

He is one of the better DC in the SEC by reputation. But the real uncertainty is the freshman talent and whether they will make key mistakes caused by a fast paced and very skilled offense (Clemson) or allow another hammering (400 yards last year?) by a SCar offense that is mostly the same. Add to that the fact that Clemson may push your pass protection/secondary and SCar may mostly run against you like last year, and there is reason to be concerned that the new talent will be tested beyond its current skill level in the first two games. By the end of the season, especially after all the trial by fire, they may get back to being in the top ranks of the SEC. But the start is certainly making some fans nervous.
