Contracts, extensions, and buyout thoughts

Just a thought:
No contract or extension of said contract should be for more than 3 years / seasons from date of signing contract or extension.
Buyout of contract should be no more than $3 million per the average wins over past 3 seasons.
If coach reaches 10 years, the buyout would be $1 million per win over the past 3 seasons. This is more of a severance than a buyout.
I still think buyouts are crazy but at least base it on performance. My numbers may be high but that’s the concept. Still better than $50 to $60 million.

Nice ideas for sure, it makes sense to me

But what makes “sense” to us means nothing in these structured corporate contracts.
Buyouts of CDS and many other coaches contracts are about as dumb an idea as it can get monetarily. LSU and PSU among others are able to buy it out, but at what cost ?? Is there a guarantee of success now that they’ve fired and paid off a low performing coach ??? No way, which tells you it’s just a bunch of paper flying around with no true value other than the paper the contract is printed on.
Maybe a 3/4 year max contract with a few million buyout to start and comes down each year until contract ends or is extended. 7/8/9/10 year contracts just make no sense, but even worse is the buyouts that are agreed upon…… I don’t get it, especially when they renegotiate and extend the contract after 2/3/4 years and increase the money and the buyout lol.
Comical indeed, and these head coaches are laughing and joking, like CDS yesterday, with no true fear of losing anything.
Sad state of affairs and it’s not going to get better until somebody extremely high up in this mix says enough if this BS and lays out a much better setup.
Sounds like you might be that man, go for it!!!!

Agreed. The whole thing has gotten way out of control.
Sadly, the money (TV) is driving this whole thing. And we as fans and consumers are the reason, for loving college football.
The passion for the “purity” of college sports will begin to fade due to all this nonsense. Yes, I know money has been changing hands for a long time, but now it’s in the open and here’s what we get.
Unfortunately, this is a bell you can’t unring.

That all sounds good. Good luck getting an elite coach to take it…

Serious question
Nov 2, 2025, 1:52 PM
|
|
How many active “Elite” coaches are there?
How is this measured? Wins?
How many of them have fairly “elite” coordinators?
This is not a jab. I’m curious on your thoughts.

Not many, but even potential “elites to be” are going to command the going rate.

I agree. Not many. The going rate is what’s insane.

I wish contracts were more performance based and less salary based, too

Can’t happen due to no governing body and nobody wanting to set the example, but I would like to see HC salaries be capped at $5MM, coordinators at $2.5MM, and other positions at $1MM with some creative and generous performance incentives.
Something similar could be done with player compensation…at least in my dream world.

It’s not a dream world, it’s a regulatory world of reality. Unfortunately, college football is big money or you are out. OSU, Texas, Oregon, and a few other big dogs will run the show now unless Indiana can actually get it done this year.
I’ve seen Indiana, they look very formidable indeed. But the B1G is weak below the OSU/Oregon/Michigan
