I wish Brownell would announce that he is stepping down

before the final home game. I'm sure the AD would honor his buyout. It is the norm these days. Contrary to the Brownell Bros narrative, I don't hate Coach Brownell. I did not think he was a good hire but I certainly can't blame him for jumping at the opportunity. I can't blame him for accepting the extensions and raises that have been offered. He hasn't extorted anyone. I have no reason to believe that he has done anything less than his best.
When a 13th year head coach is complaining that he doesn't know how the NCAA selects teams for the tournament (it is actually really simple and he most certainly does), it is probably time to hang it up. He'll have no trouble finding another job and Neff will not have any trouble finding a suitable replacement.
Apathy is rapidly turning into antipathy. After 13 years, a win at UNC, and being our winning-est coach - Brad deserves a decent send off. Clemson and Coach Brownell will be deprived such an opportunity if he tries to ride this thing to the end. If Neff should choose to retain or extend him, they both risk becoming pariahs to those that most want to support a thriving basketball program.

Well stated. It's past time to see what someone else can do

I have no hate towards BB and wish him the best. He'll receive a great severance package and a new coach will be starting fresh with a few talented players. This doesn't have to be a spiteful divorce. Neff set the bar, if BB can't reach it, then he needs to be let go.

Agreed, and I've thought about this possibility as well.

I'm sure Brownell knows the deal, and whether or not he's going to be retained. If he's not, I could see Neff saying something like, "Look, you've had a good run here, and we're grateful that you ran a clean program and were a positive influence on so many young men. But, we talked about this, and you know where we are. We would all prefer that you step down, bow out gracefully, and get a nice send-off in your last game here."
As long as they were willing to pay my buyout, I'd much rather go out that way.

Why would he step down? He’s laughing all the way to the bank.

I expect he would receive his full buyout in this scenario. Only reason for him not to go this route is if he truly believes he'll be back for round 14. I don't think things will get better for him if he does.

While in "theory" I agree with you that this scenario is what would be "best" for all parties, I doubt Brownell will step down voluntarily.

This is as good a way forward on this as any.

It would be great for Brad and Clemson to see him cheered on and out as the winningest coach in program history in an environment such as that while enough goodwill remains. Would make the ACCT and likely NIT games easier to swallow for fans regardless of outcome. It's as win / win as it gets at this juncture.

He could retire from coaching and become an assistant AD.

Unfortunately that seems to be the way it is going. Jack’s accomplishments were significant enough that it has made sense to welcome him back into the fold. What has Brownell really accomplished? Will we introduce the Sweet 16 team at halftime a decade later? Maybe we’ll sneak the team that beat UNC into the Dean Dome at halftime to celebrate an anniversary? Seriously - 2 possible milestones in 13 years. Yuck.
