Anyone attend the '86 Stanford game in Jax?

9

Sep 24, 2024, 1:11 PM

this was my first in person bowl game. I don't remember a ton, but I do vividly remember the paratrooper what was bringing the Stanford flag missed the entire stadium. I remember the cardinal band - they were silly and fun.

vaguely remember a scene from a police academy movie that was filmed that day.

crushed them the first half, then held on in the second. anyone have any other memories of this game?

I was there too. We took a boat taxi across the river to the stadium. The people we road with were the parents of the QB for Stanford. A flask was passed around and everyone drank for a good game. Two different halves for sure. Stanford band was awesome.

I believe Clemson took a 27-0 lead in that game early, then Muster and Stanford rallied, but fell short.
This year, it should be another early lead, say similar to the last 2 games. Dabo shouldn't put that 2nd/3rd group of defenders in though. They're pretty BAD. NC State shouldn't have gotten 35 points, but those reserves are terrible. Can't tackle, just horrible. Sammy Brown was the only guy that looked like he ever played football on the field in the second half. #### be a great one, but the rest, just keep those reserves on the bench. At least keep the defensive starters on the field for 3 quarters.

Stood in line for a concession behind a Stanford band member. She had a large white living rat on her shoulders.

That's right. A rat.

Yeah, there was a Stanford Band member who brought her pet rat everywhere.

Here's a photo with the rat and some Clemson girls:

Yep. I was there. I was a member of the Gator Bowl Association for many years and attended the game whoever played. Always pulled for the southern (home ) team although I had to hold my nose a couple of times (e.g. UNC vs Michigan). It was always a plus when Clemson played except for that year we got curb stomped by Pittsburgh. That was a long cold night.

we shut their all american fullback down. it was overcast and cold. But the final score and us holding on made it a bit warmer and the Jagermeister helped as well.

Yes, we were there. The boys and myself, along with a dearly departed cousin and friend. Sitting behind us was the great statesman, Senator Strom Thurmond. He preferred sitting out with the regular folks, instead of in the press box with the big shots. What a great man he was and a true gentleman.

I was there…We were staying in the same hotel as the Tigers and when we pulled up to register, Danny Ford came out the door just as hubby opened the car door and beer cans fell out of car…Coach Ford laughed and said, “Someone had a good time on the way here”… My mother and mother-in- law were mortified….lol…Definitely can’t forget their crazy band at halftime…

Gator Bowl in Jacksonville was also my first live-in-person bowl game.

Was still undergrad at Clemson and went with then-girlfriend and was completely unprepared for the turn the weather took and sweatshirts were sold out before I thought to try to buy some.

Seats were in the top row, too, so that wind was blowing.

When the parachuters in pregame one didn't make it and had to back off and landed in the parking lot, we could see him land. The other barely cleared the stadium wall and we could have almost touched him as he went directly over our heads.

My dad and I went. First bowl game. I was 16. Foggy. Stadium was so rickety. I remember us sitting on a huge lead to close out the game. Their sloppy embarrassing band. And we went to the boat parade the night before and it was freezing. Didn’t stay long.

Yes, it was cool, damp, and foggy!

saw an ad in the orange and white for a room in fernandina beach...everyone was saying that all the rooms would be sold out in jax..ad said close to the game..turned out to be a hole in the wall that was quite the drive to clemson fans in jax so we stayed at the beach in the off season ..lonely ...lol ..we went up 24-0 in first half, they tied the game in the second half it seems like at 24 all then we won on the fg.... rodney williams was game mvp i believe ( or was that the penn state game ? )...i remember the gameball guy missing the stadium and the stanford band, but man all of this was a long time ago..faded memories...

My Dad and I were on the way to Jacksonville when we were notified my grandfather had passed away. Obviously, our plans changed but I still have the tickets today.

I remember watching the game on TV. Clemson jumped out to a commanding lead and held on as the Stanford FB Muster was virtually unstoppable in the 2nd half. Glad the Tigers held on for the victory.

I was there with a good friend of mine that had a cousin on the team. We hung out with the team some, got some swag. We were sitting near the police academy scene. Hoping maybe we would be in the movie, but we were not. All in all, had a great trip with some cool memories.

Go Tigers!

Re: Anyone attend the '86 Stanford game in Jax?

I was at the 1986 Gator Bowl as a member of the Stanford Band.

My main memories:

Clemson fans were really nice. Several of them welcomed us and thanked us for making the trip out from California. It was a big difference from how I was used to being treated by our Pac-10 rivals.

Everywhere there were $2 bills with the orange Clemson paw.

At halftime Clemson was winning 27-0. It was wet. It was cold. Things didn't look good for Stanford, but then the tables turned. With a minute left in the game it was 27-21 and Stanford had a 1st down on Clemson's 29 yard line. But Clemson's D held on when it mattered.

The people who made the Gator Bowl souvenirs didn't realize that Stanford's mascot is the Cardinal (single, the color red) and not the Cardinals (the bird). I used to have a towel that read, "Go Birds!", and here's a pennant I picked up depicting a rather angry bird:

And here's a bonus photo of the Stanford Band's dance girls tickling the Clemson mascot:
