Doug Burgum as VP
May 10, 2024, 7:43 AM
|
|
Curious what Republicans & Democrats think
My take:
He adds nothing to the ticket in terms of grabbing some extra votes (white male from a small state that has voted republican for eons)
Could add some fundraising savvy and help get the backing of some deep pockets that are otherwise sitting on the sidelines because trump is too polarizing
I think his real value would be in office where he brings more combined business AND government executive leadership experience than just about any candidate on either side of the aisle. Just not sure how much Trump would really put on his plate and whether he would really utilize his talents.
What do y’all think?

I don't think Trump would listen to him or anyone else who he has as his VP. He will listen to Hannity. Anyway, I would think the pick would be a good one.

I agree.
That’s my concern too. It’s going to be hard for him to trust and delegate.
Probably would also depend on the power dynamics and who he would tap for chief of staff.

Also, Burgum would teally standout in comparison to Harris. Everyone wonders if Biden and Trump will make it to the end of their term. More worries about Biden, but Trump may not either. Burgum seems like he could step right in and make most Americans feel comfortable. Harris worries people.

Yeah, its late in the game for Biden

But if things stand, I think keeping Kamala Harris on the ticket may go down as one of the dumbest political moves in the last 50 years.
If Biden tapped a centrist (Manchin, Gabbard, Sienna, or a Mark Cuban type) he’d be cake walking despite his poor record and performance.
I know the base gets excited about Harris, Newson and MObama but I don’t think those names really persuade that middle 5-7% percent of folks whose vote is up for grabs.
And I don’t think Harris is going to drive out the base like she did last time because I think even the most partisan liberal recognize her poor performance on the big stage to date

Lieberman was a bad pick as well. He looked like a little Jewish elf. It's just not a great pick. The country is shallow.

Yeah.
If he wins, it’s because more women voted for him in 2024 vs 2020
He doesn’t have to carry the demographic, but he’s got to do 2-3% better. I think Haley is his best shot at shaving those points. Not sure how much value she will add once it comes to the real job of governing because Trump isn’t going to trust her with anything of consequence in my opinion

Nah...She thinks he is unfit. She just came out and said she won't vote for him in November. She also said she couldn't in good conscience because she has daughters and would be against what she believes morally. Almost no chance she would accept. She is going to make a run in 2028 and I think she will have a great chance. She doesn't want to be associated with Trump.

Your point is legitimate
If he is re-elected president, my evaluation of trump’s performance will be against his progress (or lack thereof) against the deficit
Someone will have to dismantles the bloated bureaucracy in DC really test the power of the president to refuse to spend the money congress appropriates.
Say what you will, but he’s probably the only guy that could do it without raising taxes. It would be a full frontal assault on the big business, unions, and the federal bureaucracy. Gutting and cutting entire departments.
Imagine cutting defense spending by a third, eliminating HUD and the department of Education. Gutting the IRS, Justice department, USDA and the EPA.
Probably something only a lame duck president with bull headed determination could do

Cutting defense is big. The rest of what you listed is small potatoes when it comes to spending and doesn't do squat to the bottom line. Trump made zero attempt to tackle the deficit during his last term. He will fail miserably again in a second term. Seriously, how did he manage to explode the deficit (before Covid) while having what he claims as the best economy ever? Seems like he sucks at the business thing.

Because he doesn't care about the big picture. He just wants to tout something is good at the moment with him. He has no vision and really doesn't care.

Trump wanted more spending and didn't care about debt. He even wanted more in stimuls checks than Biden. He wanted interest rates below zero. He does not care about anything but what benefits himself or where he looks good for the moment. That's why he is so weak internationally. Tell him how great he is and he is good. Criticize him and he will turn on allies. He doesn't know what the heck he is doing, and that's according to just about everyone that has worked with him. He is a con-artist.

From your own link
"Trump’s fiscal 2021 plan promises the government’s deficit will crest above $1 trillion only for the current budget year before steadily decreasing to more manageable levels, but only by relying on optimistic economic projections, dramatically scaled-back military operations overseas, and proposed cuts to agency budgets that run directly opposite to two previous budget deals signed by Trump."
