BIG NEWS for Greenr

went running yesterday for the first time since I did my back in bad in March. I am in the worst shape of my life, or at least worst since I started running 10-12 years ago. I was ready to give up running, however my son (10) is doing some run club thing at school and he wants me to run a 5k with him. I tried to pass it off to wife but he said she is slow.

Anyways, did 2 miles at a 9:45 pace. Slow and painful, but back feels OK which gives me a little hope. Calves cramped afterward when I was stretching but I felt great otherwise. Maybe I am going to be able to get back into this running thing, or maybe my back is FUBAR'd and I just don't realize it yet.

For reference, I used to run 6 minute miles at times and there were a few years where I hit 1200-1500 miles a year.

Am I back, or is the back pain just delayed? Ts & Ps would be appreciated, but if I can get back in shape, that would be fantastic.

Instead of running, you should get a motorcycle.

You could do a mile in like way more times faster.

I’m sure you know of an association of motorcyclists who could chase he and son down the road.

I ran so much in high school for cross country and track. Every year my shins killed me and lo and behold, I have stress fractures in both shins. I don't run any more.

2 things that keep my muscles stretched, but also keeps my back in check.

Pigeon pose, but take the trunk of your body to the floor. You can pull your knee up towards your face or back it up towards your hips and it changes the stretch a little. Love this one.

Any piriformis stretch will work, but this is my favorite, hard to explain so here is a picture.

Both of these combined keep my back pain and sciatica away. Just have to be disciplined and do them every morning and night.

If insured, get primary care to write a prescription for a PT

See a good PT / clinic that has been recommended for rehabilitation of adults for sports activities and overall fitness.
They will provide treatment and exercises to help strengthen core and other muscle groups for running and other lifestyle activities.

(Obviously weight can be a factor in back fitness.)

If there was one PT who you liked and seemed especially competent, then maybe see that one again _ once or twice to review ongoing program. Otherwise as you know, it’s about discipline and routine _ including the stretching. (I hate stretching especially hamstrings.) GL.

Front squats or Bulgarian (with dumbbells), some type of dead lift ( dumbbells fine) stiff or Romanian...then some core work like hanging knee raises and static core work like planks. Remember to not hold your breath on knee raises, that way core works harder.
Then 10-15 of good stretching.
Id limit high impact exercise, like running, until you get your core and posterior chain stronger...per your posts its weak...dont fret so is most Americans.

I would need to deal with. It was causing MAJOR sciatica issues though, so everything I did was painful. I was limping everywhere, crying out when I got in or out of a car. Could give me meds, suggested rest, etc. This was around December/January. I quit the gym about a month before, maybe Thanksgiving. So I rested for a couple months while it was "cold" out. Decided to go for a run in March, made it less than a half mile and I felt something bad in my back. Got back to house, laid down, proceeded to not be able to get up for hours. Stayed in the floor all day long with pain in my back that felt like I was breaking in half. Scared my kids, wife laughed at me, then realized I was being serious. Wife took me to urgent care that evening, got two shots, one for pain and one for inflammation, and they said take it easy. Took muscle relaxers and did some PT.

Left leg went numb on outside, sciatica went away, but I was scared AF to do anything strenuous. Hiked and biked out West, but still scared I might mess it back up. That's how we got here, 6 or 7 (lolololololol) months later and I am trying to get restarted.

I need to rejoin a gym, but fitting in gym sessions with our family schedule is TOUGH unless it is 5:00 AM.

You gotta do what you think is best for you but from a 76 yo ex runner/jogger be careful. Running is the reason i was able to quit smoking in 1976 and kept running until the early 2000's when i had my first hip replacement (2007). Not saying that pavement pounding was the only reason but now have both hips and both knees replaced. No more running since 2007 but still walking 3 miles or so per day. No regrets here but don't push it too far. FWIW

If you keep running, your back issues will return. Walk, swim, cycle, hit the elliptical and do resistance weight training.

Running was once my passion. It provided stress relief, an endorphin rush and allowed me to eat anything I wanted without gaining weight.

I had to give it up, but I'm in good shape, keep the weight stable and though I miss running, I miss knee and back pain not at all.

You will absolutely reinjure your back eventually if you ramp up the running.

It sucks, but it's reality.

8:36. I'm sure I could get that down a good bit because I didn't know how to pace myself. I do walk a lot and have been doing some jogging on the trails where I walk, but they are sandy hilly and lots of roots and ruts to avoid. I was somewhere around 12 min miles on the trails.

I have been doing .1 mile run, .1 mile walk on the trails for 2 miles than finish with a half mile job bookended with half mile walks to get ready for ski season.

I'll quit jogging in ski season after I go out west. I don't get tired or worn out around here.

Walking is much better than jogging.

what the orthopedic surgeon said who scoped my knee about 20 years ago. I'd commented on how many people were in the waiting room. He said - "Oh yeah, business is good. And it always will be, as long as people keep pounding the pavement". We joked about how your body was like a car, and don't put too many miles on it... you'll wear it out.
