Dumbassery on full display. An incredibly dangerous experiment to arrive at a conclusion we already knew without doing a dangerous experiment. Place should be shut down and someone should go to jail. Both "sides" we've created agree on this.
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.10.13.512134v1Role of spike in the pathogenic and antigenic behavior of SARS-CoV-2 BA.1 Omicron The recently identified, globally predominant SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant (BA.1) is highly transmissible, even in fully vaccinated individuals, and causes attenuated disease compared with other major viral variants recognized to date[1][1]–[7][2]. The Omicron spike (S) protein, with an unusually large number of mutations, is considered the major driver of these phenotypes[3][3],[8][4]. We generated chimeric recombinant SARS-CoV-2 encoding the S gene of Omicron in the backbone of an ancestral SARS-CoV-2 isolate and compared this virus with the naturally circulating Omicron variant. The Omicron S-bearing virus robustly escapes vaccine-induced humoral immunity, mainly due to mutations in the receptor-binding motif (RBM), yet unlike naturally occurring Omicron, efficiently replicates in cell lines and primary-like distal lung cells. In K18-hACE2 mice, while Omicron causes mild, non-fatal infection, the Omicron S-carrying virus inflicts severe disease with a mortality rate of 80%. This indicates that while the vaccine escape of Omicron is defined by mutations in S, major determinants of viral pathogenicity reside outside of S.

In all fairness, it wasn't "technically" gain of function

research. Although that is splitting hairs. And it was done with a purpose, but the results of the study were already WIDELY known anyway.
They took the S genes from omicron and spliced that into the Wuhan (original) virus, and the combined omicron spike and Wuhan (rest of the virus) ended up being HIGHLY lethal to the unexposed rats. In gain of function studies, humans add something NEW to the virus to change it in a way that is totally unique. So they took an existing part of one virus and mixed it with an existing part of another virus. That's not creating anything, technically. They also argue that mother nature has already essentially done this with the XD variant. It is almost entirely Delta virus with an Omicron spike. Furthermore, the argument goes the rats, 80% of whom died, had zero immunity to anything. The variants, like XD, may be milder (now) in humans since we all have some immunity, through infections, and vaccines, and both. Meaning if that virus were to escape, it would not kill 80% of humans, and would be just as mild as the recombinants we have, as we have population levels of immunity. If this chimera virus from the study was released in Wuhan or anywhere before January of 2020, it may well have been 80% fatal, but it isn't now.
At the end, the study found the severity of the illness and infection is not dictated by the S genes in the spike, but in other areas of the virus, which....we already knew.
And yes, they should lose their funding. This "probably" wouldn't make any difference if released from the lab, but that's not a chance anyone should have to worry about in the first place because this type of experiment should not be done. There was no need to do it really.

It’s becoming pretty clear how civilization ends one day. We destroy ourselves.
