I wonder why most Duke BB players aren't great pros
Jan 21, 2018, 8:35 AM
|
|
They've gotten some of the best basketball players in the nation out of high school for literally the last 30 years. Out of all of those players only 2 guys have been really good players in the NBA:
- Grant Hill (and that was 25 years ago) - Kyrie Irving (who maybe played 10 gms in his college career for Duke due to injury)
That's it! I get wanting to play for a legendary college coach, but if succeeding in the NBA is one of your goals I'd question if Duke is really the move to make.

version of the Harlem Globetrotters. Their weaknesses get compensated for by other players on their team and strengths accentuated. When they get to the pros reality hits them that they have been ill prepared.

They've had a few other decent players, but he's the last real star I remember. I'm probably forgetting somebody though.

Very few of [insert any top team]'s BB players are great pros

Talent pool so spread out. One and done just a holding tank.
If I were his parents I would have recommended Duke as well unless his heart was totally committed to Clemson. Either way, kid with 90% of being a lottery pick so a moot point.

Let's see
Elton Brand played 16 years and scored almost 17,00 points averaging 16 night with 9 rebounds Carlos Boozer has scored 14K points in 12 years Deng and Maggette were 1 and done at Duke, have 25K points between them Mike Dunleavy has scored 11K points averaging 13 night Irving was mentioned JJ Reddick has hit more 3pt than anyone recently and has played 11 years.
Recently Ingram looks solid in LA, Parker is playing great for the Bucks and Tatum isstrong also.
Duke has more players in the NBA than any other college today

You may want to rethink the definition of great if want to include the guys you listed. I'd consider great as being an all star at least 3 or 4 years.

Tatum will probably be rookie of the year in the NBA.

Kyrie Irving is great. Anyway, I get your point. A big reason was that in the past Duke wanted to only go for top recruits who had a goal of getting their degree and graduating before they went pro, or at the least staying a few years. Coach K gave up on that and is now cool with the one and done studs to mix in. It all completely ended with Elton Brand.

You mentioned the big thing though.. K experimented with recruiting four year players instead of 1 and dones for awhile and it was largely unsuccessful. He did ultimately win a title like that in 2010, but the next year he signed Kyrie and started going after the top flight recruits again.

I'm not a Duker and I'm even less of a K'er, but there've been a few others: JJ Redick did pretty well. Elton Brand and then another forward similar to him (forgot name - has been fairly recent, and played for years), Laettner was just OK, not great, two great guards went down to injury early in careers (Hurley, Williams), but I know what you mean. The skinny white forwards have done nothing (surprise, surprise). Then you've got Tatum for the Celtics, who is good already and will be great (played one year, left Duke).
