If we could hit some more of those deep balls then that would open the run game up. Just a matter of getting Watson comfortable in the passing game first.

You don't even have to hit the deep balls. Scott said it himself, "it's frustrating when you want to run the ball and they load up the box." Jeff, I hate to say it but this is not rocket science. You've got the best QB ever to walk on the field at Clemson. When they put 8 or 9 in the box, you THROW THE ### BALL. It doesn't have to be deep! Eight in the box playing the run, 4 receivers, ahhhhhhh... you've got them outnumbered! Let your Heisman QB be in control!

I bet if you throw more on 1st down, the results will be better. 90% of the time on first and 10 it's handoff up the middle.

I love Jeff Scott....but why would teams stack the box
Sep 26, 2016, 5:51 PM

against a team (US) that is supposed to have the best quarterback in the country and the best receiving corps in the country. That doesn't seem to make sense to me. It just seems like we are back to the Chad Morris years where all he talked about was running the football, but we never did do it particularly effectively. I think running is a mindset and right now we don't have it.

They'd stack the box because it's easier to hand a ball off and pop a big run than it is to hit a big pass. We have a "pick your poison" offense, but if you don't load up to stop the run, we'd kill them with the run AND pass.

Get Feaster outside on a screen with his speed and it should open up the middle. Use Feaster's speed for God's sake.

I feel like the Feaster situation is somewhat similar to DW4 playing behind Cole to start his Freshman year. Turn him lose and use his speed to open up the field. IMHO. ??

Read above response... it's not rocket science. If they load the box, put the ball in the hands of the best QB to ever walk on the field at Clemson and tell him to run or pass, but make the first down. If they don't load the box, then you run the ball. Why must coaches outthink themselves?

Good one! It's so easy even a cave man can do it.
Every now and then those D-coordinators will disguise pre-snap what they are actually going to do! Unfair isn't it?

Honestly is there any team in the country that is really just running the ball very well? Apart from the teams that have the "scrambling quarterbacks" it seems like a lot of teams are having difficulty finding a solid running game. This year was supposed to be a solidick draft class of RBs coming out such as Fornette, Chubb, Gallman, and so on. However, many of these guys have just ran into a wall every time. I think defenses have gotten to the point where they are committed to stopping the run and are pretty much daring teams to throw the ball and beat them through the air.

Excellent point. And our Defense is really no different. I would bet we are effective at stopping the run on Saturday night. They will test our DBs.

We are one if the teams that is supposed to be able to throw the ball and beat opponents thru the air. We just have to be dedicated to it practice it, and then call the right plays during the game. Simple isn't it?

Why would any coach want to provide anything more than 'general' information? None of the fans need to know their gameplan or changes their making and the details certainly don't need to get out to the opponent. He's just a coach trying to be polite by answering the questions without providing too much information.

Exactly, I never understood that from fans.
Having said that. ....I do think this is relatively simple so there wasn't much more to say anyway.

If the opponent stacks the box why do you not try to run sweeps? You would think that getting the ball to a speedy guy outside would force the defense to adjust I can only remember the jet sweep a few times all season. Last year with Scott that was a big play much of the time. Isn't Feaster ideal for that kind of play? Screens should also work if the receivers will block. Not seen a lot of that. Running Gman up the middle works sometimes but not enough. Imo

There really is no variety in the running plays

All of the running plays are pretty much up the middle. Not to mention that almost all of the runs come on first down which I imagine is incredibly easy for a team to scout.
Literal illustration of our running game.

We had 5 possessions in the second half against GT
Screwed up the first one because of a bad pass
Screwed up the second one because Scott ran backwards and lost the first down that he had already achieved.
They scored a TD
We screwed up the third and I can't remember why
We intercepted the ball
We scored a field goal on the fourth. Missed wide open pass in the EZ
we left the ball on their 3 yard line and ran out the clock on the fifth one. We could have scored to make it look good but we took a knee
We don't run block very well IMO.

I think the bottom line is that when our offense is clicking

It doesn't matter what the defense is doing......they can't over commit to either the run or the pass. We just haven't started clicking like we are capable..........until this Saturday!!!

Umm don't we have a Heisman candidate QB and a stable of 4/5 star WRs?

Why do we insist on TRYING to run the ball over and over again????
THROW THE BALL. BLOW THE INFERIOR TEAM OUT. THROW THE BALL TO OPEN UP THE RUN GAME.
Why is this so hard for our offensive coordinators? It's like we have lost last year's playbook.

It's a good problem to have when dealt with the right way. What problem is that, it's having so much talent in the skill positions, there isn't enough snaps in a game to play all that talent and give them enough snaps for each of them to find and get into a rhythm. I think until our coaches chooses who is going to take us through the game, the offense is going to continue to sputter bc of not enough snaps in a game to satisfy all of our talent and allow one or two of them to get into a rhythm!!!

Receivers have to catch it. And the QB has to hit wife ### open receivers. Problem? ...... They need to get their heads in the game. They have the talent... They have the coaches..... They're kids.... They will become young men soon I hope. We may get rolled by the Lou, but it won't be because they are more talented.

I think it is time for Dabo to look for an OC. The Co-OC situation just isn't working this year like it did last year. There's no reason we should lose. Superior D, Superior offensive weapons. All they have is 1 guy who can run the ball

Could it be that DW4 does not want to be "dual-threat"?

And wants the running backs to run and him to be more of a pro-style qB. I don't blame him!

So far, I'm not sure he's shown be can be a one threat QB yet. It's true that receivers have missed some balls this year, but DW4 has overthrown some balls, just missed other open receivers, and not gotten us out of running that are going nowhere. Where's the coaching, what's the answer?
