Serious question for the board regarding DJU

May 9, 2022, 12:08 PM

Does anyone on here truly believe that he doesn't have the tools to be a high end starter for us?

I've seen a lot of hate recently, particularly around some of Dabos statements about the QB room and DJ in particular.

This isn't a Cole Stoudt/Kelly Bryant situation. DJ has immense physical tools, which he showcased in 2 starts as a True Freshman. Obviously, something was off last year and he didn't look phenomenal in our Spring Game but nobody really did on the offensive side.

Here's to hoping DJ has a phenomenal year and that Cade gets a ton of playing time due to blowouts to prepare him for the future.

He needs to be at clemson all summer and work on timing with all receivers, including 2nd and 3rd stringers. I hate to say it and I believe it was a factor in his practicing last summer, but without the NIL money seeking his attention this summer as much, he will be more focused on proving himself and getting to the next level and that can only be good for our offense.

I just hope we have a couple of guys that can 1) catch the balls thrown in their neighborhood and 2) stay on the field. So many drops last year...

I truly believe DJ will rebound and have a great season. Like others have said, he needs to commit to an entire summer here in Clemson with the skill guys. The sample size I saw his freshman year is enough to tell me he has what it takes to deliver us a championship if he’s dialed in mentally.

May 9, 2022, 12:35 PM

Not a strength. I still wonder if throwing that interception for a td messed him up. Because after that we still could have a great season. He also didn’t have a great line or great wrs. DW and Trevor took a lot of pressure off the line. I am very hopeful and I am one that think he does have the tools. But if he doesn’t come out slinging it then we need to look at other options.

Seven or eight sacks against UGA.
Pick 6 deciding play in game.

That was enough to shake any first time player after all the hype he was getting.

I think DJU did a lot better once the offensive game plan went mostly running backs. And I think he will bounce back and have a decent year, but unfortunately he is never going to put the teams on his back like DW and TL.

Just my thoughts.

I couldn't agree more. He lost all confidence in the opening game and never gained it back. If you look back at his two starts his freshman year and his high school film (against some of the best competition in the country), he has everything it takes, god given talent, to be super successful. The coaches need to bring their A game with him. If DJU has a "successful" season, we make the CFP. Cade is going to be dynamite but I don't think he is what I would call Trevor ready from a physical stand point for this year.

May 9, 2022, 12:47 PM

footwork is inconsistent at best and he makes unforced bad decisions.

His lack of athleticism and footwork puts extra pressure on him when the play breaks down, as it inevitably does, and he struggles to buy time with his feet or get up field quickly which results in some really bad decisions under the least bit of pressure. We don't have the quality of offensive linemen that we can just line up and hand the ball off when everyone knows what is coming and count on our defense to win the game. We have to be a solid threat in the run AND pass game to have success against better teams.

Having said that, we will probably run him more often this year given that we have more capable backups than last year should he get dinged up.

Re: No question

May 9, 2022, 12:58 PM

it is a shared responsibility the entire offense has to accept. Bad blocking and missed assignments on offensive linemen, poor route running and drops by all receivers, running backs lining up wrong or missing blocks, questionable play calling, injuries and covid not allowing consistent lineup, indecision and thinking too much at times and not trusting routes to be where QB wants to put the ball. And last but not least the inability for DJ to hit a bull in the butt from 10 yards away. Talk is over and time for every position to be earned to put the best players on the field together. If feelings get hurt then folks will have to be butt hurt. This is big boy football.

right on all counts. DJ can not keep throwing int's in our backfield. I'm stupidsurprised this hasn't been brought up. those kind of bone head decisions are just stupid and fall on him. Hjgh school qbs playing 1a ball know better than that. I saw a play where he stepped up in the box and no defender in 10-15 yards and he threw the ball 10 yds out of bounds, he could have easily run for a first down, it is those kind of plays that are so frustrating. To me that is the reason Dabo and Stretter have got to be ready to say enough is enough and pull the plug'

The only tools I see from him is that he is tall, abd has a cannon for an arm.

Other than that, he is inaccurate, not very athletic, looks uncomfortable in the pocket, bad footwork, and has bad throwing mechanics.

He looked like the worst Clemson qb ive seen to start the year, and to end the year. He looked the same in the spring game. I don't understand why people are expecting such a huge improvement from him.

Yeah, kind of feels like his performance in the BC & ND games were an anomaly, after last season and the spring game. His level of has been fairly consistent and steady. I just don't expect to see a significant improvement. Injuries or not, he had more talent around him than any of our opponent's QBs had and a far more talented defense, excluding the opener.

Agreed, and not leave him in to the point we blow the season. I still can’t forget what I saw (didn’t see) last season. The Spring game did nothing to show great improvement. Hopefully he’ll rebound to the two games I saw his first season.

I will say this...

May 9, 2022, 1:03 PM

I didn't see anything in the spring game to convince me that his performance is going to be significantly better in 2022. Slow progression through his reads, late delivering the ball, and inconsistent accuracy are all areas that still seem to need improvement.

Re: Serious question for the board regarding DJU

May 9, 2022, 1:05 PM

If DJ can find the QB that he was when he played against Boston College & Notre Dame last year, he could've been a QB that could have competed on the same field with about any QB we've had at Clemson in the past 30 years with the exception of maybe DW4, and Trevor Lawrence. The exception is bc I believe that DW4, and Trevor is in a class that separates themselves from any of the past greats we've had at QB. Both of those two were at the top of the Elite QB's in college FB, with DW4 already proving Elite status as a professional, and Trevor will soon do the same!!! With Trevor being selected as the #1 pick, as the #1 QB in the draft, he was set back the very second his name was call, and going to the worst team in the NFL with an unproven HC in the NFL!!!

May 9, 2022, 1:33 PM

yes, he has the physical tools to be successful, BUT does he have:

-the mental tools? eh? maybe, but he's got a LOT to improve on here.

-the WR corpse? IMO. Absolutely not (the WR 2-deep from 2013-2018 would wipe the floor with our current WR 2-deep)

-OLine? IMO. Nope

Re: Serious question for the board regarding DJU

May 9, 2022, 1:42 PM

DJ has a lot of weight on his shoulders, I in no way envy him. This year will help clear up his legacy...was his (2) Freshman starts the abnormality, or was the sloppiness of last year the abnormality?

While some components of our team I personally do not expect to see exponential improvement this season (O-line needs it, and is completely banged up w/ a new coach), I do see individuals/performances drastically improving, notably in the WR corp and running backs room (which is scary to think how good these guys are already). If DJ can match that improvement, I think the results will be more in-line with the 2020 campaign for the young man.

I tell myself last year was a perfect storm, and Clemson was too slow to adapt offensively (probably due to shock/disbelief in the beginning). We have fresh play calling and position coaches in key areas, and we also have proven position coaches returning in areas that have shown growth.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Two things. After his two starts in 2020, the big thing

May 9, 2022, 1:53 PM

I questioned was his mobility/running ability because we didn't witness either against BC or NC in 2020. That is a huge issue with him still.

Also, those 2 games in 2020 were played with hardly any fans due to COVID. I wonder if playing in front of 80,000 screaming fans affects his composure or concentration?

Re: Serious question for the board regarding DJU

May 9, 2022, 1:57 PM

It's the decision making not the physical tools.

Not sure you can fix that and for the better teams we play they will be trying to confuse him.

The injuries around him didn't help, but without his bonehead mistakes we probably beat Georgia or NC State and are in the playoffs.

Re: Serious question for the board regarding DJU

May 9, 2022, 2:09 PM

Last season he didn't have the tools b/c they were all on the injury report.

Does anyone here actually believe themselves when they cast the majority of the blame on him?

Lets recap 2021 - his parents went through a nasty divorce on the other side of the country from him. As most kids would have he got depressed, ate his feelings, and didn't focus like he should have. Then he broke the tip of his pointer finger on throwing hand and sprained his knee. Then he lost RB1 & RB2 (Melusi & Dixon), both starting tight ends to injury, 3 of 5 linemen, and 6 scholarship WRs.

Sure he looked like crap but there was ZERO continuity on the offense. Very few QBs could have overcome all of that.

Re: Serious question for the board regarding DJU

May 9, 2022, 2:40 PM

There is more to consider than just physical tools. When Jamarcus Russell left LSU for the NFL the word was he could through the ball 50 yards while seated. This was beneficial for Jamarcus because he couldn't read a blitz and spent most of his NFL career on his butt. Several QBs have been supplanted by those who couldn't throw as far or run as fast but had the football acumen to read defenses and check down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, he has the tools. But, can he produce?

May 9, 2022, 3:31 PM

I don't know how you go from setting a record at Notre Dame to last year. Everyone was disappointed in losing to UGA... but not like that. And if he DJU thinks he was under pressure last year, wait until he overthowing/underthrowing passes against GT and Clemson wins by 7 or 10. If Clemson is not up by 24 points going into the 3rd quarter of the first 5 games... if DJU is still playing into the 4th quarter in these games because he keeps missing throws, Dabo is going to yank him...

May 9, 2022, 5:54 PM

He has a GREAT year, he gone to the NFL Draft.

He has a mediocre start, loses his starting job, he gone to the Transfer Portal BEFORE the end of the year.

He plays average, but keeps his job somehow through the end of the year, he still gone after the season. (This one I think really unlikely, Dabo is not going to tank a season with the talent we have by sticking with a bad starting QB when there are potentially better options on the bench now. But, if it somehow happened, I believe there would be a Come to Jesus meeting after the season where Dabo tells DJ it is Cade's team going forward. Not to mention, Vizzina coming in next year as well.)

I seriously doubt DJU can improve from 96 to top 10 rated QB

May 9, 2022, 6:09 PM

I will be happy to be wrong. A very high percentage of Tnetters wanted to stay with Kelly Bryant over Trevor Lawrence. And Dabo made the right call. So I am great with leaving it up to Dabo and Streeter to make the call in 2022 ...

IMHO it will take an undefeated 2022 season to make the playoffs with the ACC's level of play reputation. This year's Tiger D-line (and Defense) is stacked and talent level will decrease in 2023 due to likely NFL losses. So this year is an opportunity to make the playoffs I hate to see the Tigers give up. QB mobility, accuracy, and ability to audible to the best play can make up for a multitude of Offense shortcomings.

We'll see what happens and when. Go Tigers!

I'll believe it when I see it. You must hang out with a different crowd from me. Everybody that I know said KB would never make a QB and they were right. DJ is worse. He is too slow mentally and physically to make the right decisions, and his mechanics suck causing his accuracy to be awful.

I hope he gets it together, and I'm pulling for him, but I doubt that he can. Just hope Dabo plays the best player, whoever that is, like he did with Deshaun over Cole and Trevor over Kelly. Also hope he decides who is best before we lose a game.

May 10, 2022, 10:08 PM

I think he has the physical tools but lack that which is most important. He can not function under pressure. Therefore, he selects which option he intends on executing before the ball is snapped. He can barely keep up with his primary receiver and often looks at them throughout the time when the play is developing.

Some folks might think the kid is stupid but he's not, imo. He just has a brain fart under pressure and any team that proves to DJ that they can get to him shakes him to the bone. I think a part of his problem is fear of getting an injury which could end his career.

He's not going to make it. Sorry to be so harsh but you asked.
