Is Texas really buying all the recruits they want...CBS says different. Thoughts

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/texas-is-losing-head-to-head-recruiting-battles-in-the-2026-class-so-whats-behind-the-longhorns-strategy/
"Texas will spend what it has to at premium positions, but it's not going to overextend itself," South said. "Sometimes the asking price is just too much. Steve Sarkisian has maintained that they will not pay high school recruits more than established contributors on their roster. I think that reflects well for Texas in its roster retention the last few years. Remember, it costs money to maintain what you have, too."
The Longhorns didn't lose a single starter to the transfer portal after the College Football Playoff this past season. Backup tight end Amari Niblack was the only projected starter for 2025 that left. In the previous transfer cycle, Texas had just two starters exit -- defensive backs Terrance Brooks and Jerrin Thompson.

Don't forget that there are only 11 players on the field at a time and that really good players will not sit on the bench, they will go somewhere else.

even though in this day and age it sure feels like that's the primary cause.
So when will the changes actually impact recruiting. Because right now it feels like this recruiting season is just like before. Or is this a last ditch effort for teams with the want and money to but the best class they can before enforcement happens.

I think it's extremely cheap (pun intended) and lazy to blame money on losing recruits but fans have always done it.
Thanks for posting.

brand. They have finished in the final 4 the last 2 years. It's just simple and dismissive to say a kid only chose them over us, Oregon or UGA because $ but the reality is, Texas is currently one of the "elite" programs that kids are going to choose to go to regardless.

report.
IF there was a cap then this would hold some validity. But under the current protocol their budget for NIL far exceeds most other schools. So them saying they're not going to overextend themselves is purely subjective to them and their boosters.

That's a great point. Their cap for not overextending may well be much higher than other schools.

insults are applying an old College sports mindset to recruiting. Getting outbid is just a part of the sport now. This is what we signed up for. They aren't doing anything wrong if they simply offered a player more money. Or I guess "technically" they are...I think there still might be some rules about that, I don't know...but practically speaking they haven't done anything that isn't allowed or indeed even applauded.
But it's certainly true that we could offer a kid more money than Texas does and Texas still wins. We all know we offer a lot but someone might want to be a Longhorn. Can't win 'em all and Texas has a ton to offer. It is impressive that they appear to be taking care of their players already on the roster very well.

I think that is what the other post was talking about. Texas cap for being unreasonable is higher than others. That being said, you won't be able to spend that kinda money according to the new rules (it has about a 20 million cap). Or is that not going to be the case.

20 million cap the school will pay in revenue sharing. The kids can still get “NIL” deals from the west by oil tycoons lol so kids will have the 20 mill split from revenue share and then they can also get NIL money. Go Tigers!!

things go back to normal. That this is not sustainable.
With the addition of 10 football players out of the transfer portal and probably one or two more on the way, the budget for next season’s Texas roster has grown as well. It currently sits somewhere “between $35 million and $40 million,” which counts the likely revenue-sharing allotment expected to be $20.5 million as well as payouts through the Texas One Fund, a connected source tells the Houston Chronicle. This also figures to be a one-time exorbitant expense because athletic director Chris Del Conte and others have said the school plans to phase out its collective in favor of the revenue-sharing via the House settlement and with the move to name, image and likeness payouts through corporations. “It’s just unsustainable,” the source said of the high payouts. “The next season after this year, the whole world will be back to reality.” The source declined to reveal how many Longhorn players will command at least a $1 million salary because such transparency foments comparative discussions and locker-room chaos. … Head coach Steve Sarkisian applauded quarterback Quinn Ewers for not taking money from the Texas One Fund although the Texas source said he got some but was paid the bulk of his money by corporations “so Texas could have more good players around him.” … Quarterback Arch Manning is “by far the highest-paid Texas player,” as expected, but doesn’t take a dime from the school. He and his family acquired all his deals on their own “with no help from the school.”

I think we forget that NIL money is still a big part of recruiting....

UT, TAM, AND TX Tech have a huge advantage in NIL money due to the "bottomless" wealth of their alumni and fan base in Texas, alone.... Gotta remember that there almost 700,000 millionaire households and 73 billionaire households in Texas.... Sark may not pay recruits more than veterans from the revenue sharing pot, but there is still BIG NIL money available in Texas....

Good program with great results lately. Truth is they are still outspending most. They didn't lose anybody to the portal driven by fact they pay as much as anybody else...where you gonna go? They'll continue to pay current roster a ton and new recruits ...slightly less. While sometimes guys just pick different (very good schools) I highly doubt that's the case with the ones that are projected one place until 48 hours prior to committing...its money,

Folks , it's Texas
Everything is bigger in Texas
Especially football.
They eat , live and breathe for football
That's why I made the Jerry Jones remark
I remember as a kid marveling when they built Texas Stadium. I thought that was other worldly.
Then when the talk began about spending a billion dollars to replace it with what the Cowboys have now I thought it was outrageous. Then it became clear who Jerry Jones was.
He's still an arrogant *** . His ego is bigger than Texas.
Now in Texas if you don't have this attitude you get left behind
That has a lot to do with what you're seeing. Even TT has joined the fray

The oil schools, and a few favored by billionaires can and will take whomever they want. The "haves" club is very small, and we aren't in it.

One thing to remember is that schools like Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, and some other big schools have 6 to 8 times the number of living alumni that Clemson has. That is a statistic I heard sometime last year. So Those big schools have many more alumni with deep pockets to get money from than smaller schools like Clemson. And of course there is the big oil money in Texas as well. But we proved last year that we can hang with Texas!!

The knows how to tell you something he wants you to hear without telling you the truth.
"We will not pay a hs recruit more than a current player. "
Well if your current players are making more than any other team's current players then you will be paying hs more than what everyone else is.
That is why his retention is high. We'll give you more money to stay.. and that means we can give our recruits more money.
This is just another blowhard trying to cover up what his school is really doing. Everyone knows texas money.
We know the truth South.. Save your salespitch for the pearly gates.

Yea sorry I call big time bull sh*t....Texas was a Big 12 bottom dweller prior to the legalization of pay for play and now they're amongst the elite due to finances. The premise that they have a top tier coach as if they have never had one before is just outright idiotic.
No program in the country walks into the state of GA and takes the top players in the country from the same fckn high school without paying a big time ransom...Just admit that you pay for play advocators are finally starting to see how its absolutely ruining college football.

Texas has more money than even Georgia and is able to outspend them for players.
