and the staff liked as well, but didn't end up coming here for whatever reason (ie. we were full at the position numbers-wise, coaches didn't think the drama would be worth the production, character issues, etc.)? I cannot seem to think of any?

Welp, in 1965/66 I lived on the hall with a dude who was Larry Csonka's best friend from high school. And this guy was on the football team. Full schollie. I think think the story was this: Csonka wanted a schollie for his buddy. Once that was done, Csonka bolted to Syracuse and left Clemson and Howard high and dry. Pretty sure that is the correct story. It didn't have anything to do with academics as Syracuse would have been rated academically well above Clemson at the time. I remember this guy and his room mate very well. And his name. They were right next door to my room mate and me. But, I'm not going to give his name out there. Heck, he might be a member of this board.

There was a story way back about his recruiting.........

[ in reply to So why again did Herschel go to UGA?*** ] |

If I remember correctly, it went kinda like CU thought he was sure thing right up until very end. There was not a big production of commitment back then, the coach went to home with the papers, all signed and it was done. The CU recruiter was on way over about 8 am to sign him. He turned the corner, saw the new car in drive and didn't even stop. He went to pay phone, called back to Clemson and said "He's going to Georgia."

George Webster, one of the greatest linebackers in football history, was referred to Duffy Daugherty at Michigan St by Frank Howard because when he played at Westside High in Anderson football in the South was still segregated.

The QB from S.C. that was a strong Clemson lean and Lou Holtz visited him and paid him to change to Notre Dame. I believe he was from the Upstate.
