I don't buy the whole "our team will not make the final 4 if we lose a conference championship game" argument. Texas might be the 800lb gorilla of the Big 12 but the SEC is the 800lb gorilla of college football. There will be provisions in place such as the final 4 will be selected before the conference championship games are played. No way they let having a conference championship game be a disadvantage.

There's no way they will select the final 4 before they play their last game. I think they have a legitimate point regarding the downside of a championship game. One thing we need to know going in is that the Big 12 is run by Texas with Oklahoma having a significant voice, but not quite calling the shots like Texas.
From Texas' point of view, the extra money from a conference championship game is less important than positioning themselves to be in the national championship picture. They don't want to be 11-1 and get caugt looking past someone like Ok State in the championship game. It's a realistic possibilit that a 3rd or 4th ranked Texas would drop to at least 5th after a loss so late in the year.
For Clemson, the extra money from the championship game would be more of a driver. Realistically, we know that most years, we will not be in the national title picture. We may be in the discussion occassionally, but at least 4 out of 5 years, we won't be one of the top 4 teams after Thanksgiving. If Clemson were in the Big 12 right now, we might well be pushing for expansion and be frustrated by Texas' veto. We'd also be frustrated because we would not have such a veto.

Actually the latest rumor I heard was that the final four would be selected after the regular season. If one of your conference championship teams is selected to the final four then they would not play for the conference championship game and the next team behind them would play it instead. You don't have a true conference championship game but its a win/win. The conference gets their extra game AND a spot in the final four without having to worry about getting knocked out by losing the conference championship.

together during this inter-conference game talk and hashed out an agreement not to come into SEC territory (via TV rights) They can possibly make the the ACC wither on the vine so to speak for a couple of years and then raid it while enjoying the spoils in the meanwhile. Not a bad business proposition for the Big 12 if you ask me.

Not that businesses don't do this kind of thing, but I doubt that they'd engage in such a nakedly illegal conspiracy, especially considering how college sports is already on guard against potential antitrust suits.

They definitely backed off and said they were not looking to expand after the threat of a lawsuit. After it was all over, they said aTm and Mizzou walked nekkid to B'ham, begging to get in.

Once the Bowlsby is in the job I think we'll see this heat up once again. Neinas probably didn't have to power to broker expansion even if he wanted to.

10 members are not content with 10. When July rolls around tcu and wvu will vote with the rest of Big 12 to expand.Cu &FSU will be invited to join.Oliver Luck Wva ad has been speaking on Cu's behalf. Done deal for both teams. Big 12 will pay half of 20 mil for both schools to join.
