Techies - help please
Feb 22, 2022, 9:49 AM

I am getting set up on hundreds of email lists as I type. Someone is using my email address to set me up for this SPAM. I probably have hit one thousand by now.
From what I read, this is an effort to do something to my PayPal, or Venmo or similar that I will not see that email as they think I will just delete all these emails.
I am diligently marking each as SPAM (Gmail account).
Anything else I should do or am I just f'ed?

other than what you are doing.
Change your email address? Other than that, there's not much recourse I can think of. Make sure you have a complicated password.

marking SPAM and reporting phishing. If you want support from Google, you can buy a domain get a Google Workspace subscription, and set up an e-mail address there. There's little support from Google on the free accounts. If you know what lists you're being subscribed to, you can unsubscribe but my guess is that if it's bot-driven, you won't be able to keep up. Mail bombing is how they're hiding intent.

Here's my approach to Gmail and spam

Gmail allows you to use periods in your email address and still recognizes it as your email...
so for my "real" stuff (bank, brokerage, personal, taxes, gov stuff) I use dawgh.hater.23
and for everything else I use dawghater23
then you can have a rule that looks for the send to, and have all that #### get archived and deleted.
it will take some time to slowly correct, but it has been very effective for me over the past 5 or so years that I've had this implemented.

The other thing you can do is a + sign

I know a lot of people who use gmail and, when signing up for websites, put their email in as
jroberts+tigernet@gmail.com - (jroberts isn't my gmail, so feel free to fire away at whoever owns that)
gmail ignores everything after the + sign, the email still comes to your gmail account, but the "to" address shows the full address as you had entered it.
Where that's helpful?
When you start getting tons of new spam messages, you know who sold your personal information.

Make sure you have 2FA setup on your PayPal/Venmo accounts so more than a password reset will be required to get in.
You can also set a filter for PayPal/Venmo emails (let me know if you need the send to address) to star them or something, so that they're more easily identified when they come in.
As for the spam, not much you can do if it gets past the gmail filter except unsub/delete.
Good luck.

Someone went on a Panera Bread spree in NJ using my panera bread profile, and also did a gorcery pick up order in the middle of the night from walmart (I caught that because I happened to be awake)
Going forward I only use American express on websites since their security is top notch.

Knock on door. Spray gasoline on the perp. Light fumes and walk away uttering a clever line while nonchalantly tossing lighter to the side in a low-angle rear camera shot.

CC company is going to want you to do a police report or two. Probably up to you to try to run the perp to ground and snuff him out.

But I had to 'look' at each one to be sure there were no more fraudulent charges.
