How many Clemson Students-Soldiers have won the Purple Heart?

15

Jan 8, 2023, 12:39 PM

I like to read of our brave Clemson men & women who have served our Country with valor thru Clemson publications and The Scroll of Honor.

One such Clemson Student was 1st Lieutenant Archibald Carlise of Mullins SC, Class of 1941

He was an Ag Major, served iin the Perishing Rifles Drill Team and had married his sweetheart from Walhalla b/4 entering service.

Archibald was killed in 1944 serving with the 357th as they crossed the Saar River on the Siegfried Line in Germany when he was hit in the chest & left shoulder from fire from a German pill box while leading his squadron.

He actually survived for awhile and received field medical care but the intense fire was so great that under the cover of night he was left behind (presumably dead) without his identifying info or dog tags being taken so to let the Army know about him..thus he was initially declared as M.I.A.

He was awarded the Purple Heart later after his story was brought to the Attention of Gen George Patton from Archibald's Sister who wanted to find him and learn what had happened.

Gen Patton penned a special note back to his Sister telling her what had happened that day & night, that he had fought heroically, that his body had been hastily buried that evening for safe-keeping til they could secure the grounds later..and that he was buried in Lorraine France at the American Military Cemetery.

So, "Archie" is one of Clemson's Purple Heart recipients.

Salute Sir & Go TiGER(s)!

Daniel was in the Gulf Wars era - way later than me in Vietnam- but I am sure lots of Clemson folks have been killed or wounded in all wars since the introduction of the Purple Heart- just look at the Memorial across from the Valley for those with the ultimate sacrifice

Daniel was an Afghanistan vet, not a Gulf War vet

as the only American casualty of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He won several awards, including the Purple Heart. He was born in Spartanburg. graduated Greenville High School in 1944, and Clemson in 1948. And of course he has the memorial in Cleveland Park in Greenville.

I prefer to say “awarded” instead of “won” a Purple Heart.***

"Awarded" is the appropriate word, not Won.

Just for clarity, you don't "win" a purple heart. You are "awarded" a purple heart for an injury received in combat.

My dad, a 33 graduate, was awarded one as he was wounded in France in July 44. My uncle, a 43 graduate, GL Wise is recognized on the Scroll of Honor. He died March 10, 1945 as a German POW. He was part of the 106th that was captured December 16-19, 1944.

I'm sure that dozens of my classmates at Clemson probably were awarded purple hearts, as it was right in the middle of Viet Nam. David Murray, a retired accountant from Greenville who was several years behind me got one, along with I think a Silver Star. I probably could have gotten one when I burst an ear drum from a land mine explosion, but I never considered it being wounded ....... no blood ....... and I would have been embarrassed to take one when so many of my fellow Marines were badly injured. One of my OCS classmates got one when one of his own men shot him through the calf muscle, but since it could not be proved that one of his men, it "had" to have been a Viet Cong bullet.

FF if a result of enemy action or when responding to enemy action or attacking the enemy, should, by the letter of the law, be good to go.

In the case of my OCS classmate, from what I was told by those familiar with the situation, it was the result of one of his men shooting him in the leg on a patrol because he was an a**hole and he was apt to get his men killed over some stupid decision he made in the field. Knowing him well, I found it a completely plausible circumstance.

Before I took over my platoon, the previous platoon commander called some of his men a bunch of sissies. The next morning there was a piece of paper hanging in his shower that said "sissies can shoot rifles". This was at a time when fragging officers and staff NCO's was not uncommon.

Ah yeah and there is that. Before my time and not something that i had to deal with.

Got it. No proved fragging and it was on patrol (assuming a mvt to contact) then ....GTG.

At least if he was an a*hole he got shot for it and hopefully his men were better off with the new LT.

Semper Fi, Marine.

Pretty much it! I was in the hospital in Guam with another Marine Lt. who set up his mortars behind where he had set up camp for his platoon. Later that night, after receiving contact, they turned the mortars where they were firing over hos position. A couple of short rounds landed in his encampment and killed several of his men and wounded him (and others). For this misjudgment, he was court martialed. I later ran into him in Okinawa and asked him about the trial. He said he was found not guilty because they could not prove it was his mortars that landed in the compound. Therefore, he too got a Purple Heart.
