Like him, I always heard it wasn't worth the effort to go, and I never found myself feeling FOMO.
Just us? Of course I also don't like kettle chips and got mocked for that, so....

Mac was always cool with me, even let me leave my car in the parking lot one time while when I needed a tow.
The old man needed taken down a peg or 3. The young fella needed a few more brain cells, but never really saw it as a effort or hassle to go.
All that said I haven't been in 20 years or so and don't figure it is high on the list to go to if I'm in town.

Also got a Bud Card there--Budweiser credit card lookin' thing that was good for a 10 or 15% discount at Plez-U. Don't remember if it worked anywhere else, probably not. I got the Reverend Horton Heat to sign it some years later, and he was duly impressed by the existence of a Bud Card and its associated discount, as he was quite the lush 25 years ago. Probably still have it in a shoebox somewhere.

I remember the food being fine (and cheap). The service varied from indifferent to actively surly. I ordered a milkshake once to see what would happen. The waitress was clearly displeased.
I'm not really sure why it is as famous as it is. I've heard Mac Smith's has a good burger but I have not been out there.

ways you can get it too. Definitely worth going.
I grew up eating at Mac's Drive-In. Haven't been in a long long time, tried to go a couple times recently but it was closed. Mac was a great guy, in college I went behind the counter (as I usually did) to refill my tea and this lady looked at him and was like "You're just going to let him do that?" to which Mac replied "Well hail, he's been eating here since he was 2, he can pretty much do ### well whatever he wants." And since I was a nice guy, I refilled her tea. #tsb

It’s cool to see all the memorabilia.
The food is what you used to get at a middling independent burger joint back before there was fast food on every corner

[ in reply to Ancheaux's was my spot. I would love to know the recipe for a Blackjack. ] |
|
Part of what made Ancheaux's so good was their bread. They made their buns fresh from scratch each day.
So yeah, getchurself a good bun, butter the top and bottom and put them on a flat grill until they just start to brown, then pull them off.
Chicken = small chicken breast, butterflied and dipped in melted butter, placed on the flat grill. Season liberally with Lawry's season salt and blackened seasoning. Season one side and put it facedown on the grill, then season the other side as it starts cooking. Flip once the first side is cooked and and give it a couple of minutes. Once it's pretty much cooked through, drop a slice of monterrey jack cheese on top of the chicken and two pieces of cooked bacon criss-crossed on top of the cheese. Pull the chicken once it's cooked and the cheese has melted.
Top with lettuce, tom, onion and condiments to your liking.
#### I miss that place.

Yeah, the seasoning was the same for the chips as it was the black jack. I don't remember sugar being part of it -- I think the mix was a 2:1 ratio of blackened seasoning vs lawry's season salt, but that's not to say sugar wasn't part of the recipe at some point. I worked there toward the last couple of years it was open, and even then, they were all about experimenting with new flavors and trying new recipes for different things, so I wouldn't be surprised if the seasoning had evolved by the time I got there.

when I was going to school or since I moved back to area and have lived here for 18 years. Just not a place I've ever been interested to go. None of my local friends have ever suggested or expressed interest to go have lunch there either. Weird.
I have played golf with Pat, I got paired with him one time at Walker Course. He might have said 10 words the entire 18 holes.

Now that's been addressed, Macs is one of the worst dining experiences of my life. Rude staff, food sucks. At one point one of the guys who runs the place threatened to fight my friends and I. We were freshman, one of my friends was talking to the waitress about being new to Clemson, nothing rude or anything. Apparently it was the dude's daughter and he thought my friend was being too flirty or something. He comes over and asks if we are ready to fight, then tells us to leave.
The burger reminded me of cafeteria food, either hospital, school, or Luby's. It has to be bottom of the barrel Sysco stuff. I cant understand how it retains business.

The biggest turnoff though for most people (I think) is that Mac was kind of standoffish to people he didn't know or was friends with. And the guy with the wondering eye was the same way, and if you asked for a shake, and you weren't some former player or whatever, then you'd feel unwelcomed.
HAVING SAID ALL OF THAT.....the absolute best time to go to Mac's is (was) on Homecoming Saturday, whatever part of the day the game wasn't being played. I went in there one night after a noon homecoming game and saw several Super Bowl Rings pulled up to that counter. And Mac was having a blast talking to Steve Fuller, Terry Kinard, and some others. I imagine the crowd of former NFL great players that venture to Mac's is not the same now that he's passed. But anyway, was a neat place at one time, for sure.
