That bought tears to my eyes. I remember every one of those calls! I always listened to Jim even when I was in the stadium. He will always be the voice of the Tigers. I can only imagine how he would have called our two national championships. RIP Jim!

if Jim was still working the radio I'd tell Specturm, Disney and ESPiN to kiss my ask and tune in to the Voice of The Clemson Tigers and get back to my roots.
I hurt for you, brother.

The dreams of spending time with him have become few and far between. The grief became less than hurtful, more like a gladness that I had him in my life for 19 years and my obsession to craftsmanship perfectly was his gift which keeps on giving.
Looking back, I'm not sure he wanted perfection from me but he taught me how to work, work hard with one goal, to please him. Maybe that goal was mine and not his. He was only 36 when he died and I'm still trying to figure him out.
I can say this: As the years pass the memories change and I remember his undivided attention most when he was my teacher, my father. I can see where his love bloomed most when he showed me the patients I didn't notice he had for anyone else.
It doesn't get easier, it gets sweeter until the sweetness of memory overwhelms the grief and that grief fades as that sweet, sweet love thrives.

1980 basketball win over #1 Duke, 13,500 in a rocking LJ
1981 Orange Bowl, didn't get to call it as Mutual Radio had exclusive rights. Nervous as he ever was watching a game. Sat alone in the press box chain smoking, lol
1968 Frank Howard's last win at GT
Woody Hayes Gator Bowl
Watson to Renfrow, though the well circulated mashup video was awesome

Thoughts and prayers are with you today. With Furman being his last game, it's ironic they play the Chickens today. Maybe they can pull off the upset in honor of your dad.

Loved listening to Jim Phillips in those days, but thanks to your post , as I sit here in TD’s, I can’t get this out of my head. It was 20 years ago today, Sgt Pepper taught the band to play.

Jim Phillips was a friend who was closer than a brother. I never met him other than listening to him call games. His voice was my connection to great joy and sometimes deep sorrow. Jim Phillips was with me in all Tiger moments from glory to disappointment on the journey of Clemson sports. More thrills than spills but what mattered was the moment of listening to Jim unravel the tale of each game describing the unfolding of victory or defeat. How many of you took your transistor radio to school to listen to ACC Tournament basketball. When the Tigers were on TV my Dad and I would mute sound on our Philco TV and listen to Phillips call the game on radio. The voice was a part of my relationship with my Dad. Jim was a link to whatever game our Tigers played with all the bonding it created. This continued with me and my son and grew our Father-Son relationship as well. I am truly thankful for this man I never met but always heard. The roar continues.
