There must be some trick

to this I don't know.
I'm building porch railings out of 2x4s and store-bought metal tube balusters. I drilled 3/4" holes for the 3/4" balusters in the top and bottom rails and it took a ridiculous amount of time to get a seven foot section together. There won't be anything to hold the rails together until they're attached to mounts that let them slide in from the side.
I don't have a drill press, so the depth of the holes varies, which doesn't help.
Any ideas?

the Mrs I needed to do. But I'm not sure it will solve the problem since the balusters will still wobble around.
It would help some, tho.

Temporarily attach another piece of wood

to them before you mount them.
Or put a strap around them, like one you use to tie down crap in the back of a truck.
Or I do not understand your issue.

You're onto part of it

I stapled cardboard on each side from top to bottom to keep it from coming apart once I got it together. But when assembling, the balusters wobble around and try to come out while I'm slowly bringing the top rail down from one end to get the next one seated.
Standardizing hole depth is prolly a must, so I gotta get a drill press or guide.
Warped wood will give me the same issue as inconsistent hole depth.
My mounts arrived in the mail today, so I'll be mounting the bottom rail and putting them together, then mounting the top rail after assembly going forward.
All this because the Mrs. didn't want wooden balusters.

Can have it Thursday on Amazon. I'm sure Harbor Freight probably has one in stock and cheaper...

I'm sure there's a few amigos in the parking lot of Home Depot who would understand, and could help you.

actually a different but substantially similar one that was available a few days sooner. Was especially key to drilling the angled holes for the step railings.
Thanks for the tip!

To get uniform depth, I put a piece of tape on the drill bit

determine what depth you want the holes to be, then wrap some painters tape around the bit at that depth.
If you don't have painters tape, then any tape will work. If you don't have ANY tape, then just draw a line around it with a sharpie marker and watch it real close.
