Yep just because you do not like rap does not mean it does not take talent. Just listen to Eminem tell a story in a song or Lil Wayne put out some of the best metaphors ever thought of.

While I enjoy a good G-Funk jam with Nate Dogg's silky smooth melodies blended in the hook, I'm more partial to the more...ahem...substantial.... hip-hop artists of the 90s...
I'm sure you had your share of street cred at Wash & Lee...Merry Christmas to you as well, friend!

I do try to value everything and Tiste was kind enough to find some good vibes he knew I'd be partial toward. No cred, just fast friends.

though I know just a little about rap. Didn't hear anything against me as a white man, but I did, and often, hear a lot of lyrics that talk about different people's perspectives. There is a difference in singing/rapping about or for one's experience and stating its against yours. Then again, I have no idea what you are or what you are listening to.

I really don’t want to get into any political or racial arguments. Even if I respond to you unbiasedly, I know others will take it offensively. All I will say is there is a lot of rap that if a white rapper said the same about black people, it would be a national tragedy.
Also, Merry Christmas!

....but music has always been linked to politics....From "Yankee Doodle Dandy" to Hendrix & Bob Dylan & Neil Young to The Clash to modern day rap.
Political themes have been fundamental principles of nearly every genre of music throughout history. blues & folk music, classic & punk rock, and the majority of all hip-hop/rap were all heavily influenced by politics
But I do agree that I enjoy Kendrick's older stuff more, for this very reason

A “majority” of music is not influenced by politics. There is definitely a solid amount of political music, but “majority” is a huge stretch.
I really don’t have a problem with political music when it is in support of your group or if either side was fair game. I have a problem when music constantly goes against a single party and group. If some of the raps, songs and statements that have been made against the current or most recent Republican administrations were made against Obama or Hillary, it would be a national tragedy and that person’s career would be over. Now it is a right of passage to bash Trump.
Please don’t make this a political thing. I am down to talk music, especially rap. And I know that Trump is not everyone’s favorite and he has his flaws. But my support of him should not offend you.
Merry Christmas!

True, "majority" is a stretch indeed..

...but I said "majority" in reference to rap and hip-hop specifically. Not majority of all music. I did say that politics have played a role in every genre throughout history, which isn't a stretch by any means. Are you sure you read my post carefully? Seems as if you twisted a lot of what I said around, and I really didn't say all that much to begin with.
I wasn't offended by anything you said at all, hope I didn't come off that way. Where did I ever imply that I might be offended by your support of a particular candidate or political party? Specifically Donald Trump? You brought that up, not me. You said "don't make this a political thing," yet you got wayyy more specific about politics in general than I did. All I said was that it has long been a theme in music.
By "politics" I mean the broader spectrum of the government as a whole, and more of an "anti-establishment" kind of theme when I talk about politics in music...Not so much of a blatant 'republican vs democrat' kind of thing.
I also think you are putting too much emphasis on this being Trump related. Dozens of other artists have been very one-sided in their stances on particular politicians, and have received heavy criticism and backlash because of it....two recent examples being Neil Young and the Dixie Chicks in response to their outspoken opinions on George Bush. Numerous radio stations here in Ga still refuse to play any of their music at all because of it, and I'm sure that's pretty commonplace nationwide.
But isn't that what being an artist/musician is all about? The ability to create based off of what you believe in? Why should music have to stoop to being so PC that musicians can't be expressive without the fear of hurting someone's feelings? They aren't out to please everybody. Nobody says you have to agree with an artists beliefs or even like their music at all. It's your right to feel the way you feel about it, and I'm not intending to 'point a finger' at you for having an opinion.
Merry Christmas to you too, gtriple®...Go Tigers!
PS - I went back and re-read my previous post that evoked your response...are you sure you meant to respond to me? What in the world caused you to think that your opinions were offending Me? And what does Trump have to do with any of it? Maybe you want to go back and reread everything again too? LOL

a B+ average. She is kind of bright. And she can quote Kayne West's last three albums word for word. My son loves Biggie Smalls and Tupac. They are both old school and don't care much for the New Breed" of rappers. I'm afraid both are music snobs. And I don't like rap so I can't differentiate between what is good or bad, but to each his own. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff. PS My son is a pretty fair guitarist and electro-pop musician.

My daughter stole my first run vinyls of "After the Gold Rush", "Electric Lady Land", "Blood on the Tracks", "Dark Side of the Moon", and "Harvest" and bought a record player to take to school. My son listens to BB King, Peter Green, Metallica, Bucket Head, Yes(his favorite band), Marty Robbins, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin,(yep 50s and 60s pop), and death metal. Both love classical music and Celtic music as well as rap.

Kendrick Lamar is a rapper who likes to use the race card to promote himself and his "noise".
I cant really call it music, because it isnt. All of his lyrics are essentially Black Lives Matter propaganda with some fancy rhymes thrown in.
tl;dr he's a left wing political activist disguised as a rapper and most of his music is crap.
