4 star vs 5 star

Anyone have any insight on what it takes these days for a recruit to be classified as "5-star"? (Not that it makes that much difference) It seems like a ton of highly ranked kids for their position ( i.e. Watson #1 dual threat QB is four star. ) One would think if you are #1 at your position you would merit 5-stars.

Brad Lawing, the South Carolina defensive line coach and former UNC-CH recruiting coordinator, says that recruiting rankings and sites are a scam.
“I can take a three-star and make him a four-star, and I can take a four-star and make him a three- or two-star with the contacts I have. That’s how ridiculous recruiting on the Internet is. Usually a 5* player is a no doubt impact right away kind of guy. A player that can go to 95% of schools and become a starter. Now that doesn't always work out because it is hard to measure intellectual ability to grasp the playbook/instincts in recruiting but that is what you are shooting for.
A 4* guy has all tools to become that type of player but isn't quite there yet. Everyone knows they will be a starter but just not sure how long it will take to get there.

It's an arbitrary way of looking at things, but I think they generally just mean:
5 star: Immediate contributor/starter depending on position. Potential 1st-2nd round NFL talent.
4 star: 50/50 chance of redshirting or contributing immediately. Could start at a position with little experience or depth. Most likely ot make an impact in 2nd year and beyond. Potential NFL draft material.
3 star: Player needs development. Will likely contribute more in the upperclass years. Could play in the NFL one day as a later rounder or UDFA.
2 star: Scout team or special teams contributor. Can become a contributor on offense or defense with the right coaching and development. NFL talent not apparent, but could be developed.
That's what I read it as, anyway. Not that it means much.

It depends on whether a kid is leaning, somewhat to the secheat, or not. If they are, they get the extra star.

He just looks at tape from games, camps, etc. He is not concerned with offers, recruiting battles. Just watches game tapes and attends high profile camps. He did say that another site gave a junior-to-be backup QB at a high profile high school program a 5-star rating despite the kid not playing yet and not showing much which he thought was strange.
His comments on Deshaun Watson was think David Greene, the old UGA QB. Average arm, speed, athleticism, but amazing intangibles such as football IQ and leadership skills. Rare high school QB that calls his own plays.

Sammy, etc. Those guys had unbelievable high school film.
Rivals seems to give out about 25 or so 5 stars each year, but once you get past the "top of the top" then I think it's hard for even the coaches to really predict.
Typically, if a prospect has been offered from every school in the southeast, like Watson, then you can pretty much label him a 5 star. At least you know he's PROBABLY better than anyone else in his position in a given year.

No as much as I love Hopkins last season he was no where near the same level as Watkins when he arrived on campus. Hopkins had the ability to become great and he did. Watkins stepped onto campus and was great.

The star rankings really don't mean much. It is simply taking potential and tools into account. Therefore, a five star would have a better shot at making an impact as a freshman than a two star.
For example, if you have a 6'7" 315 pound left tackle who has a lean frame and can move, he would be a five star. If you have a 6'3" 330 pound tackle with shorter arms and bad body weight, he would be a lower star ranking.
Having said that, it is just a gauge on potential, obviously not a guarantee. Tyler Love was a five star OT that went to Alabama and did nothing during his career. Gaines Adams was a two star who went on to be a first round draft pick.
Take it with a grain of salt.
