I don't think chipmunks have the size or power to penetrate the filth associated with Romanians.

I would use peanut butter or corn.
We actually had squirrel urine stains on the ceiling sheetrock. Nasty little fockers.

peanuts, pecans, cantaloupe, blueberrys....bastids will eat most anything. Best thing is to keep them out because you'll never kill/catch them all. A ferret would be fun!

There are no holes in the soffit that I can find, and I have a metal hip roof. He could have climbed up the walls from the crawlspace, I guess.

First, if this just started happening, KILL the squirrel. But keep the trap set because they pass around info. If any others are trapped, KILL them too.
We had squirrels in our old house (before we sold it). They built a nest and had babies. BAD NEWS. That's because all the babies know that is a nesting area. We had to hire a service because the problem was in the eves of the house. They didn't get into the attic thank goodness. But the trap had to be set on the roof, which was VERY high, so we hired a professional. He trapped and killed over a dozen squirrels trying to get in the hole. When they finally stopped, he told us that all the squirrels that bred there were finally dead. Then he put up a metal plate to prevent them from chewing their way back in.
Funny thing...they returned about a month before we sold the house.
Sucker got stuck with them again I'm afraid.

Professional probably took half of those squirrels and turned them lose in someone else's neighborhood...then distributed his card around.

That way you don't have to deal with figuring out how to release a live squirrel. Bait with peanut butter or small marshmallow.

the little bastiges for 4 years. I average 30 per year in the summer and fall - vegetable growing season. Very destructive creatures.
Actually the best deterrent is a shotgun
