I hate watching the GT games.

Nov 12, 2013, 1:24 PM

I get pretty worked up before most ACC games but GT ALWAYS makes me nervous.

I hate Paul Johnson. I hate the triple option. It's like watching someone suffocate to death from a webcam: there's nothing you about stopping it, just watch the seconds tick off. Just remember that last TD drive they had in the ACC Champ game where they just bled out the clock and we couldn't do anything about it...

And yes, it absolutely IS a gimmicky offense. Does it give us fits? Obviously. But it's a gimmick--PJ will NEVER win a bowl game vs. a quality opponent because scheme is all you need to stop it. Teams with 4+ weeks to prepare inevitably shut it down.

If we can get up early on them by 2+ TDs (which will be very difficult w/ their D) and make them have to throw to play catch-up, I say we roll. We have to score on every possession we can because we won't get too many.

Unfortunately, I think we're in for a nail-biter, 24-27 or somewhere along those lines.

Hope our front 7 shows up to play!! GO TIGERS!!

game started to be fun last year when Shuey made that tackle

in end zone. With the way Stephone is playing, and Steward is improving,it may be another fun game!

The triple option is actually only a small part of Tech's offence, although that is the lable always applied by the media. It is more correctly referred to as a spread option. Gimicky? Can you be specific as to what the gimick is? Most any offense can be replicated from the player positions at the snap. I guess pre-season #1 USCw was not a quality bowl opponent. I suppose, though it wasn't a bowl game, Clemson was not a quality, bowl-caliber, opponent in the ACCCG a couple of years ago? The few times it's been "stopped" then, why doesn't everyone adopt that "scheme?" And what is the difference between a scheme and a gimick? One thing we agree on, is that these games are usually nail-biters.

It's a gimmick because it's only effective in

Nov 12, 2013, 2:05 PM [ in reply to Re: I hate watching the GT games. ]

uniqueness. GT wins conference games because it's a difficult offense to grasp in one week, which is what most teams have to prepare to play them. GT is 5-8 since PJ has been there against FBS teams with more than 1 week to prep (teams off a bye or bowl games).

Teams that lose to GT don't get beat by the players, they get beat by the system. The players are just faceless cogs. Why do you think stud RBs aren't lining up to go to GT if they're gonna get fed the ball 30 times a game?

Clemson only had a week to prep for the ACC Championship game (which is my point entirely) so I don't see how that game applies.

If you're citing the death knell of the Lane Kiffin Show as a "quality bowl opponent" then you're clearly grasping at straws. PJ was o-for before that BTW.

I'm much more optimistic than usual for GT.

1) Their D is average, but not nearly as great as I've been hearing. A month ago after they got lit up by Miami and BYU everyone was talking about what a disaster they were on D, and now after beating the 89th, 109th, and 81st ranked scoring offenses in the country and holding them to 11.7 ppg they have this great defense.

2) Their offense isn't as explosive this year as past years. They are 14th nationally in yards per rush at 5.5 per attempt which is their lowest ranking in Paul Johnson's tenure.

3) Our defense is much improved this year, especially up front. We finally have a front that can be disruptive and make plays at and behind the LoS. The past several years against GT it felt like every play was going for 4+ yards and we could never force them into any long yardage situations. I believe that will change on TH night.

4) GT has been sloppy with the ball. They are T93 in TO margin at -4. They've thrown 9 picks and lost 9 fumbles in 9 games. Despite the FSU game we are T8 at +9 having forced 23 TOs.

5) The game is at home.

Like you I'm always worried about the GT game, but much less so this year than i can remember in quite some time.
