The reason I don't understand why people automatically kill

copperheads is that any of them who grew up in the south has stepped within a foot (or less) of a copperhead tens, if not hundreds of times if you played in the woods...and not been bitten. In fact, they never even knew. They're so docile that you have to essentially step ON them to get a strike. I pretty much always relocate them now for this reason.
Find the copperhead here:

I was starting to think there was not a snek in the picture.

But it do be so.
I'm not as benevolent as you - I will kill copperheads if they are near the house or some other area where people are. Way off in the woods they can keep on snekin.

Re: Kingsnakes vs. Copperheads

My father in law (a real country boy, not a transplanted city Yankee like me who grew up in the rural South as a kid) protected his daughters from copperheads using an environmentally impeccable method.
His yard (in a suburban neighborhood) was covered with hardwoods and backed up to a creek) had lots of copperheads.
When out fishing or hunting, he made it a point to catch kingsnakes whenever he happened upon one, popped them into an empty pillowcase, brought them home, and turned them loose in his backyard.
(He did this frequently, because ... who'd a thunk it ... each 'new' kingsnake didn't stay in the yard for long.)
Poof ... the copperheads disappeared. Occasionally a fat kingsnake would crawl out of the wood and grab a Rolaids, but other than that they hardly ever saw another snake in the yard.

I Witnessed three copperhead bites over my summer camp career. They seemed frightening for the kid, maybe a bit panic inducing, and always required a trip to the ER. But that was precautionary. The damage looked like a sprained ankle— swollen and discolored for a few days. All three kids were back at camp the same day.

Once you see it you can’t not see it.
I agree with you. Although they are good eatin’ when properly pan seared in butter.

And I'm all up in its territory, it lives. If it's in the yard or neighborhood where it can hit a kid or a dog, it dies.
Sorry. I'll put it on a pole in the front yard to show off the work if necessary.
EDIT: I'll never kill a non-venomous one around the yard or hood.

Amazing how that 'Hershey kiss' pattern hides in leaves.

I only see non-venomous sneks around my house and wish there was one that ate moles.

Last one I’ve seen in the yard was as pieces of it was flying out of the lawnmower years ago
Saw a nice young gray rat snake next to the outdoor faucet last night
I think my possums keep the venomous ones taken care of

This time.
Of course I saw this same image with the snake circled a couple days ago. Looking at it the first time without the snake pointed out to me, I really thought someone was playing a cruel joke on everyone. But no, the snake was really there.

Maybe painting your porch black would help. Like me. I'm here to help.

Mrs. Tig went out on the porch to feed the outside cat
May 4, 2022, 3:00 PM
|
|
yesterday morning around 5:00 am and decided that she was going to take down the wreath on the door and hose it off. She grabbed the wreath, and the black snake in the wreath wrapped around her wrist. Of course, when she threw it in a panic she threw the wreath and the snake INTO the house. She ran and got the broom and swept the snake out the door before it got lost in the house or became a cat toy (the two inside cats are gloriously murderous beasts).
The dog and I slept through it all.
