suggest that Denmark's constant whining about Greenland being an economic burden. As a joke another adviser suggested that it might be bough cheap. This is paraphrased from one of the participants in that meeting and no, it's a week old and I don't remember much more than the original theme of his statements.
Trump laughed and asked if it was possible to buy part of another country or something like that. Someone said they'd look into it. Enough of the spin doctoring tomfoolery and on to your question.
Greenland would be a good place to, oh chit, if you don't figure it out for yourself you are helpless.
I suggest you remember that the closest distance between two points is a straight line and try to imagine the curvature of the earth and how that factors into your opinion. Now draw a line between DC and Moscow. Now one between DC and Beijing.

Counterpoint, why wouldn’t Denmark sell it?

Interestingly, I just learned that Truman tried to buy Greenland, so this isn’t the first time a POTUS has shown interest.
Denmark has a population of about 5 million people. The right price for the land would probably be a material influx of capital for their government.
Greenland has about 55k people, but only 12% are “Danes and other Europeans”. So Denmark has about 5,000 citizens there.
Would the expressed interest in buying Greenland be met with comparable ridicule had Obama been the one to do it? Is this just because it’s Trump? Not saying they would sell it regardless but perhaps just politely decline?

Truman.
https://www.gwern.net/Greenland
Interestingly, it appears that the Danes shelled out over $500M a year to keep Greenland. That was 2011 so I am guessing that is where Trump got the $700M number from.
One USAToday article said it might cost the US a half trillion dollars to but Greenland. I certainly would hope we didn’t do that, but why wouldn’t they offer that? That’s over $80k per citizen. Absurd.

I’m discussing a proposal to purchase a territory from another sovereign nation to both parties best interests. What does that have to do with colonization?

or it could be an offer to discuss a feasible deal to the benefit of both parties for land that has strategic value to America but is a drain on Denmark. Completely appropriate to say “Thank you but it’s not for sale.” It’s not, in my opinion, appropriate to act like he has insulted your country’s honor.

do you have a problem with Trump canceling his trip to Denmark because of the "nasty" way the Danish Prime Minister called his offer "absurd?" Beyond the pettiness of the display by Trump over the comment, does it bother you that Trump has placed that pettiness over what you value as a national interest?

centered on the north pole and he hasn't figured it out. I even ask him to draw a line between DC and Moscow then one from DC to Beijing.
Let's just face it, shall we? They are willfully ignorant and if Trump said clean water and clean air is good they would call him a racist.
