We need to just face facts. This is a 9-3 or 8-4 team. The media had all of us excited about this season, only to see this team fall flat the first game of the year. LSU is going to be 9-3 at the end of the season as well. We are nowhere near a National Championship team. Clemson's and Alabama's reign in College Football is over and next year will be tragic.

There is no reason to believe we can compete for a national championship without buying the best players. Until that changes we can only expect to do the best we can with what we have.

Back in the not too distant past it was all about selling your school and your culture to recruits. Few have ever done that better than Dabo Swinney. That’s is why he is a future Hall of Fame head coach. I hope none of you ever forget that.

We also can’t compete for top talent as long as we are hamstrung by membership in the lousy ACC. Why would recruits want to play against substandard talent; they’re going to go where they have a chance to be the best by beating the best. The ACC is getting left in the dust by the new “superconferences” (Big 10 and SEC). If we don’t make the jump, we will perennially be on the outside looking in. Being on top was fun while it lasted—I’ll treasure those 2016 and 2018 memories—but the changes to college football the last few years have ruined the sport for the underdogs. There are very clearly “haves” and “have nots” now, and those teams who are not members of the two superconferences will never catch up. The future of Clemson is mediocrity, in my opinion, unless we dump this stupid conference.

LSU did a lot of the things I thought we might do on offense. Mainly, getting the ball outside the tackles with misdirection and short passes to running backs outside. Their run game started in one direction and the running back cut it back to open spaces a lot of the game, especially the first half. Our starting running back is a converted wide receiver. I would have thought screens to the flats and wheel routes would have been something we would do a lot of. I did see one jet sweep with Brown that was relatively successful - 5-6 yards I think. I expected to see more of that too.

True on the returning offensive starters, you would have thought they would have grown into strong burly men, unfortunately their still boys trying to compete with the junkyard dogs in the trenches. As a few of you have already mentioned, just wait til you have to face this calibur of dogs game after game, Enjoy your high school game with Troy. It will be all smash mouth after this one!!

yet we don’t develop players that well.

We use the bulk of or funds to pay current players in order to keep them, yet they aren’t better than the transfer portal guys and the elite high school recruits the top teams are getting.

Well, I suppose we can rest in the fact that we “do things the right way.”

It is not the coaches, it never was, LSU was good. Our players this year are better and more experienced and if they can flush the loss, we can have a good year and play for another ACC Championship. LSU was largely an unknown coming in but they are LSU and Brian Kelly is a good coach so it was always going to be a tough game. LSU was better than expected and we will have better games because we will not play a team as good as they were the rest of the year.

It’s ABSOLUTELY on the coaches. Our players weren’t prepared and it’s been this way for years. Most of our coaching staff is garbage. Especially our OC, WR, RB, S&C coaches. This isn’t some “gosh we will just fix what’s wrong and build on it”.

It’s a pattern through and through. We seem soft, undisciplined and look lost half of the time on both sides of the ball. These players didn’t just forget how to play football when they got to Clemson. They were awesome at their position prior to getting here. The regression is real and that, again, is COACHING.

What are you smoking? All of these loses to SEC teams have been about coaching. It was painfully clear Kelly far better out-schemed us. Same for Louisville last year. Once SMU made adjustments in the ACCC we were pitiful for 3 qtrs. It took a miracle to win that game despite being up three touch downs. I got a glimmer of hope with the defense but Dabo and Riley obviously can't figure it. I'd like to start calling for a new OC but we've done that for the third time in five years. Maybe Dabo has had an unfortunate string of hires but at some point he's responsible to ensure success and its not happening. It falls on him. Do you think a Steve Spurrier would put up with this kind of a crab shoot?

Riley was supposed to be the savior but I remember Dabo overruling him a few times in his first season. The offense was competitive against Texas in the playoff. Apparently Riley has been trained in "Clemson football". Complain about the OC all you want but where do you go from here.

Great article. Garrett Riley just seems lost.
Every running play is between the tackles with zero chance for a cut back run. Cade never scrambled to his left which was wide open all night. Receivers were never open because the scheme was terrible. His offense seems so easy to defend. There's never any easy plays that you see from other teams.

Cade couldn’t get to the left side of the field because he was pretty much spied on by LB #7 Perkins who is a freak and was mostly working against our left tackle and beating him most of the time to force Cade to his right to throw on the run with #7 and others always closing in on him. Perkins got one sack and the portal DE #44 from Florida got the other. Should have adjusted to LSU game plan with the quick throws & screen type plans to get people in space.

Klubnik was running for his life most of the night other than a few drives. Hard to be too critical on him to try and throw accurately when your running just trying to stay upright. Even though we could not run the ball could riley not adjust on the fly and see that and start trying short quick passes and screen passes in vacated areas in the middle they were blitzing from?? Just to slow down the rush a little bit and take some pressure off of Klubnik??

Kelly said it after the game we beat clemson because they were predictable. Defense played well considering how much time they were forced to be on the field. Hope that re-signates with the coaching staff. Its only one game and we should get better as the season goes along but, most of the blame is on the coaching staff for not having any resemblance of a running game, not being better prepared and most importantly not adjusting to what they were seeing....

Correct you are. Offensive coaching beat us. Riley is the Head of the offense. It is his responsibility to be able to adjust and find something that works. He did not have us prepared for this game. Cade also did not play up to his capabilities. He as Dabo said : Did not have a good game.

and for some reason, it was going to tight man to man from the get go. I know it’s easy to see from TV versus the field. However we should not have been in the situation. Once again, we almost totally ignored the TE as a weapon. Maybe our OC is not as good as we thought or maybe the OL had a lot more issues than we know. At any rate, LSU appeared to have better talent but the kicker was we seemed to have been out coached on the offensive side of the ball

We had all offseason to prepare. We returned a bunch of veterans who played a lot last year.

We had plenty of time to install some wrinkles on offense. We also are supposed to have expert coaching to adapt and make adjustments in-game.

LSU’s coaches made adjustments, but our coaching staff - one of the highest paid in college football- could not. Inexcusable.

The SEC lives in the heads of some on here rent-free. I listened to WCCP the other day and all they did was get in every underhanded jab they could at the SEC.
For a fan base who criticizes the coots for riding the SEC coattails, ours sure does concern itself with that conference a lot.

The last time Clemson beat an SEC team was Kentucky in the 2023 Gator Bowl. At some point if you want respect you have to start beating them again. Clemson is 3-7 vs SEC in the last 10 yrs.
