Dabo Swinney doesn't need transfer portal: "I just have to go to the locker room"

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has a plan in place if he ever needs the transfer portal, but for now, he thinks he can find all the replacements he needs in his own locker room. Full Story »

The OL sucks...the portal is an outstanding Avenue to fix that.

I don’t keep up with the transfer portal.

How many great OL are in the portal now ? Not good, but great players that would come in and revamp our OL ?

I don't see a lot of OL in the portal that would make

an immediate impact...plus, is OL a position where someone can come in and make an immediate impact? I don't know...I just always read on here that OL has to gel as a unit to be optimally effective. Bringing in someone from another school would make that more of a challenge, I think.

I still say Dabo's way is the best way. It's more fun to cheer for, too, when you see a team full of Clemson men and not a bunch of mercenaries chasing a ring.

Florida just got a 5 star OT from the portal

Posted: Feb 8, 2021, 10:47 PM

We could have gotten Arik Gilbert, 5 star TE we went after heavily in 20200 from Georgia. He went to LSU for 1 year then entered the portal. I think he also went to Florida a couple of weeks ago.

You people trying to act like the portal is BS look stupid.

Oklahoma got 2 Heisman winners thru the portal.

Ohio State got Fields and Sermon thru the portal and they smoked us in the Rose Bowl.

Hold up, first of all Oklahoma didn’t get nan one of those QBs in the transfer portal first of all. They both sat at a year to play after transferring. Justin Fields filed a racial slander transfer to get to play at OSU immediately and they granted him the situation for immediate play. So don’t even act like the #### portal is just producing “BALLERS” most of the kids are home sick, have family issues, can see the writing on the wall, having mental health or health issues, or fill they weren’t giving a fair shake probably. If u leave after a semester or not even a year then that looks like they gave up on there teams via.playing time, losing games, or program in tough times. Who’s to say any are all those reasons are/aren’t enough to get a one time no penalty transfer. It’s definitely not for us to say there right or wrong for sure there still just kids 17 and 18 year olds. Now if a kid graduates and chooses to leave for other opportunities in two or there years then so be it. Good Luck and Nothing but the best. Making the transfer portal sound like this great thing it isn’t is wrong thow. I’ve watched these kids leave her before gaining there education and spending quality time with this staff. Most of them burn out or get lost in the shuffle of the process from missing school time.

Love his philosophy of a developmental program, and Travis was a great example. Recruited as a 3* he became the ACC's best running back ever! But I also like what Dabo IS saying, and that is NEVER SAY NEVER! Go Tigers!

I love the developmental aspect too AT. I also believe ETN walked into Clemson as the best RB at Clemson and one of the best in the country on Day 1.

Clemson coaches including Elliot refined his blocking and his pass catching which is now 1st class, but ETN could run on Day 1.

This appears to be philosophically at odds with the news that Pearman will be in charge of the Portal. I wish TNET would have challenged how this stands with regards to Pearman's new duties.

You are like so many other Dabo sycophants ignoring the reality that 2 things can be true at the same time.

You can have a developmental program rooted in recruiting but still use the portal in a limited way to build depth or fill obvious needs.

Ohio State is a perfect example of a program that is recruiting and development based but highly successful at selective use of the portal.

We are already at a disadvantage via friends and family recruiting and promoting walk-ons to the degree that we do. Failure to selectively use the portal is short sighted and stubborn.

Dabo is a great coach, but his ego and stubbornness show at times. When he voiced his original philosophy about the transfer portal that was before LSU and Ohio State showed how effective it can really be. College football has dramatically changed over the last three years. Failure to recognize that and adapt will be fatal to a program.

No one is talking about using the portal the way LSU and South Carolina and Florida state are using it. We’re talking about using it the way Ohio State has.

The truth is we have already had graduate transfers. In this case we are talking about getting young players that are still freshman or sophomore‘s, which will not harm the teams culture. And as other people have pointed out if a few kids through the portal can destroy your culture then your culture wasn’t worth anything to begin with.

Dabo is painting himself into a corner and being stubborn and the reality is sooner or later he will have to use the portal or the program will suffer. We might keep making the playoffs but we’re not gonna win any more championships when you look at what other programs are doing. The longer Dabo waits to use the portal and the more he runs his mouth the bigger the hypocrite he’s going to look like when he does use the portal. And he will be forced to use it sooner or later if he wants to stay competitive. That is not an opinion, but a cold hard reality!

You have the reading comprehension of a national sports

[2]
Posted: Feb 8, 2021, 4:02 PM

journalist, I'll give you that.

"It is something that I think everybody has to adjust to and you have to have a plan for. We're fortunate -- it's not like we have a bunch of starters packing up and leaving. For me, right now structurally, we are set up to deal with that if we need to but I don't have to go to the portal right now..."

"We have always been a developmental program and we always will be. That isn't going to change, but, because of the way the rules have changed, if all of a sudden you have a group of guys leave or you have starters leaving, you can have some gaps in your roster that you might have to address...but to this point we haven't had to do that."

It would take an ESPN-level talking head type of mindset to say "Oooooh, Dabo's ego is painting him into a corner!" after reading that.

LSU and Ohio St beat up Clemson in large part due to portal

[2]
Posted: Feb 8, 2021, 6:45 PM

There is no disputing that. And LSU was a wreck on the field this year and always is in the classroom. And Ohio St understands teams above the Mason-Dixon line must recruit the South and accept 5-star transfers to compete at the very highest level. It clearly works.

Dabo has built Clemson his way and hit on DW4, Wilkins, Ferrell, Big Dex, ETN, IS11, TL16, six in-a-row playoff appearances, and two natl championships giving him the leeway to do it as he sees fit.

Number one Dabo wants to win. Number two Dabo will adjust as needed to keep winning. Stay tuned.

You should go look at what Ohio State has taken from portal. It's like 2 kids. So you're saying Clemson should've benched Trevor and Travis for those guys? Bama took an OL guy last year playing for the Lions now. That's really it. They're sellers more than buyers, just like Clemson.

It's a small number of top players in the portal. As Dabo has said, if things change, he'll look at it.

You run on about LSU and Ohio State, but I think that you forget who has been more successful as a program lately. Yes they got a couple of great QB's from the portal and add Sermon for Ohio State. No offense but I have been pretty happy with the guy's that we have had in the backfield.

Yes, 2 things can be true at the same time but nothing is true independently in a football program. Recruits appreciate the fact that Dabo will not be constantly trying to bring someone in from another school to replace them. He also doesn't force kids out if they are not performing as well on the field as he had hoped. If they are doing what they are suppose to be doing off the field then there scholarship is still going to be there next year. We pass out a third of the offers of other schools. Trenton Simpson was a 5 star LB and we didn't give him an offer until just before signing day. Dabo has not devalued what it means to get a scholarship offer from Clemson. Do we miss out on some guys because of it? Certainly. Does that mean that he should start passing out offers like Halloween candy? Heck no.

When young men hear about Clemson, they hear about 2 things, Family and Culture. Those are why we have been to six straight playoffs. Those are why we have been a fixture in the top 5 of the recruiting rankings, despite having smaller classes. Those are why we keep having future NFL players sticking around to play another year of college football. Those are the 2 things that make Clemson completely different from any other college football program in the country.

Yes, you are right. We could find some better football players in the transfer portal. The thing that you do not seem to understand is that does not mean that we would be a better football team. It certainly does not mean that we would have more long term success as a program. I am glad that Dabo is opening up to the portal. However, I am also glad that he is more concerned about the commitment that he made to the young men that he recruited. I believe that Dabo thinks that he has just as much or more responsibility to them as they have to Clemson. The young men respect that and that means I might never see us lose to the coots again and I am only 51. You go on and look for your greener grass and I will just "bloom where I am planted."

I get all that but there are exceptions to every rule. Since we recruit mostly 4 and 5 star players and obviously don't get all of them we could turn a loss into a win on some occasions. Many, many big name recruits wind up somewhere else and many other players become successful at other schools and can help on any team they are on. If there are 1600 or whatever number of guys in the portal, it just makes perfect sense to at least look at the list and if there ones that Dabo already knows from prior recruiting, Bingo.

I'm sure Dabo and company have a good idea of who is out there. I suppose at some point down the road, if it becomes absolutely necessary, CDS will make use of the portal.

Just to be clear in case anyone didn't ready the story(not saying you didn't, but for anyone who didn't) and assumed from the title that Dabo isn't going to use the portal. Dabo basically said that if we lose a player at a certain position that he believes we can replace that player with someone else already on the team. He also basically said that if we ever lost several players at a position and the signing class has already passed that he would consider the portal to meet those needs.

He didn't say this, but I took that to mean that let's say we have 5 running backs on our roster, and after signing day we have 3 of those guys transfer out, and then another one gets seriously hurt in the spring. He would consider looking into the portal in that situation to find help at running back instead of being stubborn and going into the season with only 1 running back.

Basically, he's willing to use the portal when needed, but he's not going to simply look into the portal to see if he can find a running back better than any of the ones we already have. He'd rather trust our recruiting and player development.

I agree. I think he should have used it when we lost Belk and Logan. Next man up is fine but imo, should have known by looking at the roster we were short on depth and talent. Just because you bring someone in, doesn't mean you're taking a position from someone... Right? Best man up, not next man up.

But totally agree. Recruit like bama and it really doesn't matter, your next man up isn't a 2 star walk on.

This reminds me of Duke basketball when coach K was so good at getting players to hang around for all four years, but then started losing to some of the one and done teams and had to start recruiting kids knowing they were only there for one year. I appreciate Dabo’s values immensely, but it’s easy to get hung up on the model that served you well and not look forward to the model that will serve you well in the future. He might resist it at first, but I’m sure he’ll figure it out.

I fully get where Dabo is coming from on development and sticking to his recruiting model...even if at some point down the road that model includes the portal. The basic model will remain the same. Just because someone is in the portal doesn't mean they are better than what we have or that they will fit our program. I mean, c'mon, does anything seriously think the few players we've lost to the portal are better than what we have now when looking at our returning players, our January additions, plus what is coming in over the summer? I think not! Now if TL16 was in the portal, I'd say go for it! I bet Dabo would also! Go Tigers!!

Jalen Hurts, Sermon, Arik Gilbert, Justin Fields, the OT Fla just got. All 5 star players. Kids transfer for a lot of reasons and there are a lot of kids in the portal better than kids on our 2 deep. Including kids we recruited and offered. The ignorance of some of you regarding the portal is stunning. Ohio State out recruits us every year. Their 2 best players in the Rose Bowl came from the portal.

I guess you’re awarding national championships based on recruiting rankings like Georgia fans. You act like we are a subpar football program. We have been to six straight playoffs without using the transfer portal and won two national championships. The truth is you are not a true fan if you doubt Dabo at this point. There is a reason he makes the big bucks and wins championships and you have pulse hovering around the gamecocks winning percentage.

Georgia has nothing to do with this. It will be interesting to hear Dabo's position on the portal after he loses to yet another transfer QB (Burrow, Fields and next Daniels). Hey, what is a "pulse" here? Some kind of approval rating?

The quarterback that lost to Burrow and Fields, also has a National Championship. Oh wait, Fields doesn't have one of them, but he does have a loss to Lawrence. As for Daniels, if you are going to count your chickens, then I would suggest that you do it with the junior college down in Columbia.

Plus those few recruits that are brought in each year.

In the last couple years, what were we supposed to do, bring in Burrow or Fields to replace TL16? Sermon to replace ETN? The LSU TE, when we already have perfectly good TEs now? Seems silly when you break it down at that level. Sure, we could probably do with some good OL guys, but we're currently trying to bring in and coach up some good guys there too.

I like that Coach is wanting to improve our current roster and get the trench players better, and am perfectly willing to see if he and the staff can make it happen.
