My reaction to Dabo's presser today.

I watched all 50+ minutes of it. Dabo, true to form likes to ramble and give a 2 minute answer to a 10 second question.
But, cutting away all of the "fluff" that gives you insight into his character and how he thinks and how he processes things as the HC, just getting to the main thing.
As I heard someone say years ago, "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing."
Well, here is what I gathered was "the main thing" in Dabo's mind.
COACHING
"We've got a coaching problem.... It's the coaches' job to fix it....We have failed as coaches this year...We've got to do a better job...When the players don't play up to their potential it's the coaches' fault."
Forget all the other stuff. Criticise anything else he said, but remember it was secondary. The problem is
COACHING
Listening to him speak, I can't imagine what he told the coaches face to face, either individually or in a group. But, whatever exact words he used, the message to the coaches was, "You are coaching for your job next year. How you perform the rest of this year will determine where you are working next year." (I think the one exception to that is Tom Allen. I think Tom will be back next year. And, I also think that Tom and Dabo will have a heart to heart talk, "Tom if you want to bring in your own defensive staff, let me know.")
For what it is worth, that is my reaction to the presser.
Dabo, what's the problem? "Coaching. It's on us. It's on me. It's on every coach on the staff. The problem is coaching."

.... but, if I were a defensive coach not named Tom Allen I would be very, very concerned. I speculate that Allen and Dabo have already started conversations about changes to be made on the defensive staff. I would not be at all surprised if Brent Pry is not coaching some position group on the D come January.

Honestly, what coordinator that is worth a darn, would agree to coach at Clemson knowing that they cannot bring 2 or 3 assistants with them? I mean at this level, their careers are on the line everyday. If I'm responsible for an offense or a defense, I'm gonna have a say so in who some of my assistant coaches are. If not, no thanks! I don't care what the pay is. That is Dabo's fatal flaw and I just don't believe he will change in tbat regard. Im not sure i blame either coordinator under the current conditions.

I think someone has made that point clear to the coach. It ain’t the fans and it ain’t individual failures of players.
The team is playing so bad that the only rational answer is the coaching. I think everyone knows that their continued employment is being evaluated.

Sounds exactly like what many non tnet pumpers have been saying for a week or more. It's the coaching. It's always the coaching. Good or bad. That's why good coaches are paid millions. Dabo knows that. All coaches who are honest about their team's results know it. Even us stupid fans know it.
If Dabo is serious about getting it fixed, a good many current coaches and staff are going to have to be replaced. When you do that, players not giving 120% on every play in practice and on the field are going to be asked to hit the portal. I think you will see Dabo start using the portal more. Not a ton, but to fill some holes such as RB or even QB. I think Spiller and Riley are gone and will be replaced. Spiller has been a bust as a coach.

I watched a fair amount of it too. He did the usual rambling and touting of his resume (from 5+ years ago). I did like the deflection from the players. I think they needed that, especially from the guy making $11M/year.

Totally agree. The way Luke has recruited, he's a lock. If we didn't have his recruiting the 26 class would be one of the worst in this century.
He's the new guy. It's not the oline technique most of the time. It's the scheme and play that's whacked out. Just listen to Mac.
Let Tom, as Bret suggested, bring his own staff. Love boulware but he hasn't had time... but woodaz has regressed and we really don't have anyone behind them. Said last Dec, Dabo needed a couple linebackers and corners.

110% correct. Get rid of family and friends. Get rid of former players. Mike Reid suppose to be good but the secondary has been terrible. What has Kyle Richardson done? GR does not have the outgoing personality you got to have for that position. He is just calling the plays from his brothers playbook that is not working for Southern Cal either. He looks scared on the sideline and I think his players are playing his personality. Seniors on defense that have played annother scheme fir 3 years are suddenly playing a new scheme that they don’t seem to be prepared for. Tom Allen might be along with Mike Reid the only ones that survive. In addition Dabo has got to use the portal as Texas Georgia Ohio State Oregon Ole Miss Texas A&M Miami Fla State Louisville and others are using including the QB and RB situation.

I agree. I watched the entire press conference as well. It was hard to watch for me because of all the repeating of the same theme in different verbiage. Brett did a great job of summarizing it. Based on this, I would expect to see our best players on the field for more snaps instead of the continuous rotation of players. If the rotations continue to occur, CDS message didn’t hit home with his coaches, or his presser carried no weight.

I will agree coaching is part of the problem but it’s difficult to determine just how much NIL, the TP and programs with coaches who lack character and honesty when recruiting or trying to buy players through the TP.
I think you must give Dabo time to overcome the Chaos no body realized would cause as many problems in college football.
Nick Saban will never admit it but I truly believe he retired because he saw the storm coming.
With all of the money 💰💰💰💰💰 , dirty recruiting and greed by recruits including their moms and dads have made Clemson recruiting 3 to 4 times more difficult than the days before NIL and pay for play aka college football.
If those putting all of the blame on Dabo are blind or ignoring 💰💰💰💰💰 to the players has affected college football. Even with the Wild Wild West of college football Dabo has managed to win 10 or more games 4 out of five seasons. The other season we finished 9-4.
How many fans would like to regress back the seasons before Dabo became our Head Coach ?????????? I know I have posted my opinion about NIL, the TP and the chaos consuming college football but there are some on Tigernet who do the same thing every week. Many of those post are negative posts about Dabo’s failures as our Head Coach.
So in Dabo’s 18th year Clemson is off to a disappointing start. But the season is not over. Yet some of you have your minds made up.
IMO if we do not unite as a fan base and support Dabo, his staff and the players then if Dabo leaves and we go back to consistent 7, 8 or 9 wins season you have reason to continue complaining or bringing up Clemson’s past successes under Dabo 🐅🐅🐅. We will be what we were !!!
My grandfather tried to get me to realize the grass is usually not greener on the other side 💰

I agree with a lot of what you say but when coaches and their agents are leveraging success for as much money as they can possibly get and universities are trying to grab as much money as possible from TV it’s a little dishonest to call the players greedy without calling out the whole system. Is it set up well for Clemson to be able to compete with schools with more money? No. I’m hoping for unionization, collective bargaining, and a salary cap. I think that is the closest that Clemson will be able to get as far as a level playing field. Even then Clemson will be at a disadvantage compared to teams in larger markets and with larger fan bases that can generate more NIL opportunities for players.

Agreed Brett, but one thing doesn’t make sense. Dabo is as honest as they come. I doubt he’s telling coaches they are coaching for their jobs and having talks with Allen about choosing his staff. I hope I’m wrong. Maybe he’s saying “Allen will determine end of year if you have what he needs”
Though it’s not comparable at all, I run repair projects at times all over the US at large auto dealerships and auto factories, including the plant in Greer. Sometimes it’s 4-5 subcontractors I put on jobs, sometimes it’s 50. Personalities are different. None of them wrong, per se, but different. Putting an “A” player together with another “A” player does not always equal an A+. So many things can happen. Strengths have to complement weaknesses, even if those weaknesses are minor. Nick Eason may be a great coach. Maybe he’s doesn’t gel with Allen or Boulware. Only using those as an example. Being the leader of the projects I do, there are more “B” players than “A” I’d rather have on my team. They are moldable and listen. But I have to have “A” players at some positions. It’s a balancing act, managing people.
Funny story about hiring: a cohort of mine said “you have to have one lazy but fairly smart person on every team or project”
“Huh? That doesn’t make sense “
“Yes it does. He/she will find the easiest and fastest way to get something done”

I think the coaches understand it.
1. The problem is we (including me) are doing a lousy job of coaching this year. 2. I will hold you accountable for the job you are doing. 3. We are in a performance based business. If you want to stay in this business your performance must be much better than it has been this year. 4. My job is to evaluate the performance of the coaching staff. I will do that at then end of the season. 5. Actions have consequences. No one is exempt.

Dabo knows that it is the players who are not performing, and will not throw them under the bus, but knows it is the coaches job to motivate them and get them to play to their potential ........ and they are not doing that. The last people on a team that he wants to alienate are the players and he will not do that. I do suspect that some players and their supposed leaders have had a talk with Dabo ...... and hopefully a pretty stern one.

My takeaway is this:
WR's are underperforming RB's are underperforming TE's are underperforming QB is underperforming OL has been "average" (Can't criticize the coach in this case because these aren't his guys)
Defense DL underperforming LB's underperforming DE's underperforming (with the exception of Heldt) CB's underperforming Safeties underperforming
Special Teams are a dumpster fire (can't cover onside kicks, can't down a punt properly, can't return anything)
That about sums it up.

getting through to their guys, but other than that Dabo was deflecting from the players.. primarily the QB.
The coaches can push all the buttons, but if the QB doesn’t play better than it will amount to nothing.
You cannot have a successful football program with a successful QB.
Our defense played well enough to win 3 games. We won one, and lost two of those due to the QB leaving basic and game changing plays all over the field every week.
LSU - Cade missed plays all night. Humongous plays that would have resulted in first downs and TDs. He missed two easy, great opportunities on the two last plays of the game.
Troy - Cade played well in the 2nd half, and we shut them out for a 27-0 scoring run and ultimately we did what we were supposed to do.
GT - Cade missed basic and game changing plays again. If he hits half of those we have a comfortable lead going into the 4th and it never comes down to a 59 yard FG.
Syracuse - obviously they were gashing our defense, particularly in the first half. Cade again was missing basic and several game changing plays that could have easily flipped that game.
That’s the story of the season. Period.

Because someone was a great player. He is a Great person. Was a good teammate, etc.
None of that means they can instill in another person the qualities and techniques necessary to maximize their abilities.
Not a critic of the program or Dabo at all. In this instance, in fact, I am just continuing my stance alongside him/the program leader: "Coaching is a problem"!
When the head man is saying it, "I tend to agree"!
I have thought it longer than it's been said, but that wasn't for me to put out there.

They look like a team that lost the locker room.

I am surprised it took the Syracuse game for him to actually become more forthright with the coaches.
