This is a Christian sales tactic used by many...

Nov 13, 2012, 10:09 AM

Much like in business..."LIMITED TIME OFFERS" usually get real good response. Probably the greatest weapon in the evangelist's arsenal.

If all you're selling is fire insurance brother, I don't want any part of it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hey, if not going to hell is your only reason to get saved,

Nov 13, 2012, 10:12 AM

I'd say that's a great reason. Then afterward, you can learn of all the daily benefits.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fear is a terrible, but effective motivator.

Nov 13, 2012, 10:18 AM

It builds weak Christians who will likely fall. Not sure when the Church will wake up and stop using gimmicks like fire insurance and limited time offers. It's sad, and I believe it has turned more people off to faith than has produced authentic believers.

Seeing Christ for who he is, and loving him because of what he has done builds a strong Christian who is motivated out of love. It creates a daily relationship, born out of immense gratitude and the overwhelming grace and mercy of a loving God.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe this conversation is over, and we have a winner.***

Nov 13, 2012, 10:21 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think warning sinners about hell is a gimmick.

Nov 13, 2012, 10:22 AM [ in reply to Fear is a terrible, but effective motivator. ]

If so, Jesus used gimmicks all the time.

Weak Christians are more a result of weak discipleship after salvation than weak methods of witnessing.

I got saved because I had just heard a message about hell and didn't want to go. But my parents still made me go to church and continue to learn the things of God, to help me grow as a Christian. Now, you can't make a adult do anything, but new Christians must have a strong support system, or be thrown to the wolves.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So...honestly grade the Church on this support system

Nov 13, 2012, 10:27 AM

throughout the last 100-150 years then.

The whole system is setup to get them saved by hook or by crook. The system isn't setup to disciple.

You think street preachers and tract hander outers are big on discipleship? Tent-revival types? Evangelists?

Can you honestly say that the church is succeeding in this part?

I liken it to the church's stance on Abortion. We will picket and riot over a child's life to live, but how many megachurches run orphanages, have support for widows, single mothers? We just want them born...then they can fend for themselves? Same situation. We want people born in Christ...sometimes even by pressure...then once they are saved from Hell...they have to figure it out on their own.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely the Church is failing at discipleship.

Nov 13, 2012, 10:29 AM

The grade is F.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you're at a fork in the road...

Nov 13, 2012, 10:28 AM [ in reply to I don't think warning sinners about hell is a gimmick. ]

The left turn taking you off a cliff to certain death, and the right road taking you to an ice cream cone...I'd say not wanting to go off the cliff is a good reason to take the right road, whether you know about the ice cream cone or not. You just want to stay with an inexperienced driver and help them stay between the lines getting there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pat em on the back...Enjoy your ice cream...

Nov 13, 2012, 10:30 AM

they never hear from anyone again.

Eating the ice cream cone produces zealous young (fat) Christians, who eventually get sick of ice cream...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes...I'm not sure we disagree all that much.***

Nov 13, 2012, 10:31 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably not...

Nov 13, 2012, 10:34 AM

I've just heard these pitches all my life, and it was not the only tactic Christ used.

It seems to be the only tactic we use...and we beat people up over it.

I think we could approach this from a completely different angle and "catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" so to speak.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Definitely don't think it's the only worthwhile method...

Nov 13, 2012, 10:37 AM

But I believe it is a tremendously important method. "Repent, for God's judgment is at hand!" is all throughout the Bible. Naturally, since that method was used to transform my life and eternal destiny, maybe I'm biased.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mine too, and I'm biased the other way.

Nov 13, 2012, 10:39 AM

I lived most of my life out of obligation and fear.

The last two have been discovering what grace is truly all about.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

I believe in God. I believe in the Bible as...

Nov 13, 2012, 2:28 PM [ in reply to so you don't believe in the bible either, we evolved from ]

... a work of men, perhaps divinely inspired, but subject to the foibles of human nature and the effects of time on oral traditions. If you look at particularly the oldest stories of the Bible as allegories rather than literal descriptions, you'll find a lot of similarities with modern scientific accounts. And that includes the apocalyptic predictions of an earth destroyed by fire, and the Sun's future as a red giant.
