I am rather confused

Mar 1, 2020, 7:46 PM

About the call made today in the game. I watched on the net so I didn’t get to see the play as it developed on the field but I understood the announcers to say that the batter passed the runner on first base and was declared out. I am sure he did not pass the runner but perhaps they both were guilty of using occupying the same base at once. Is this what actually happened? In any event, the umpire is wrong to call anyone automatically out on a play like that. A defensive player would have to tag a runner out to record a force out. If any base was tagged by a defensive player with the ball it would be an out but I don’t think the ump can call any runner out. I thought that I knew the game but this one has me scratching my head. Comments please.

I thought the LF coots would be ruled he mage the catch

So the batter would be out & 3rd base running would go back to3rd. The batter did pass the 1st base runner so by the rules they made the correct call given he didn't catch it. .the fact they nobody knew whether he caught it or not & blue took his time is just bad luck. Something should be done to prevent this like the infield fly rule being extended but. By the rules. That was right

IF the batter did pass the runner on first the call was correctly made. It is up to the first base coach to see the umpires signal and act accordingly. If the umpire signaled there was no out it is the base coach’s fault. I didn’t see the batter pass the runner. I thought the batter got to first and turned and walked off the field.

He did, because the runner went back to tag up and the batter was inside the line about 4 feet at that time.

Bad break. I thought the SC left fielder played awfully shallow for most of the game and got away with it. Unfortunately, there is no infield fly rule for that situation. Kudos to the team for overcoming that and grinding it out.

Unfortunately, the runners did cross on the base path

Mar 1, 2020, 9:01 PM

The batter rounded first and stepped 2 or 3 steps into the base path (and stopped thinking that he was out). The runner who had been on first came back to first (retreating as he thought it was caught).

Thus when it was not caught both runners were live and, unfortunately, had crossed each other on the base path.

It was a combination of bad luck, and a couple of bad decisions on the base path, but it was the right call.
