In hindsight, anyone who went on this thing was insane. Stockton Rush was insane. I'd have been out as soon as I heard the cracks.
Couple of things I wasn't aware of: To save money, he let it sit outside in freezing temps all winter instead of storing it in a climate controlled environment. He was warned water would seep into the carbon fiber and freeze, causing cracks.
Again, to save money, they towed it for like 340 miles through the ocean instead of hiring a ship with a crane. The North Atlantic isn't exactly known for being calm, no telling what kind of additional damage that caused.
There's about a million other w tf's, well worth watching. Basically everybody knew this was going to fail at some point, and he did everything possible to speed that up. Pretty amazing it even got down that far to begin with.

if he had just killed himself instead of taking innocent people with him. The theory about him being financially strapped/pressured was mentioned a few times, even though they said he was worth tens of millions--maybe his "worth" was actually just VC capital, the kind that people eventually come looking for. Would be interested to see if the forensic accounting audit found (or finds) anything confirming that. It seems like the only logical explanation for him to be that reckless. He wasn't a dumb guy.
Weird, weird story.

You know he was terrified the entire time, especially with all the noises it was making.
He had to have been cash strapped, but then again I know people who live in mobile homes who treat their pontoons better than that. Couldn't find climate controlled storage for the winter, really? I can find a place in Seneca right now, I know he could have too. You're talking maybe $1k a month for storage, tops.
It's almost like he just did the opposite of what everyone told him out of spite.

I've got to watch this documentary, I guess.

I've always thought he was a bit cheesy, but much respect to him for recognizing the red flags and not pushing through just to get some content.

There's an HBO documentary about it, too.

I can't get enough of the story. Fascinating to watch people who think the rules don't apply to them surround themselves with yes men and flame out in spectacular fashion. It's like the Theranos story, but spicier.
"Fake it 'til you make it" just means "lie until it's true," which sounds like something George Costanza would say.

that nearly as ludicrous as going 30% past the rated depth limits for the porthole glass. That's kind of like a NASCAR team using Chinese knock off tires they got off Ebay.
I haven't seen the HBO one, will have to check it out. I did read there were distinguishable body parts when they first found the wreckage, the people didn't immediately explode into tiny pieces like I originally thought. I bet they all knew it was about to happen, probably for awhile leading up to the implosion. Scary to think about.

Obviously crazy story and the inventor seems to have either been a sociopath or had a death wish. But man, the thought of those family members being on the sub is just too much for me.

He was tech bro adjacent and tech bros think they're masters of the universe. He moved fast and broke a carbon fiber submersible. Folks need to stop romanticizing Steve Jobs and his "reality distortion field." Thankfully ol' Steve was just making phones and computers.
It's worth mentioning that changing the world isn't the same as improving it.

The illusion of progress. It's like HR making you to set personal goals for the year even though your job never changes.

Titanic 3 to 13 times, depending on who you talk to, before it went kapooey. I always thought that was the first trip. So, that makes it a little less sketchy since this wasn't the first trip - but they just rolled the dice too many times with a flawed design...

I just looked at the specs, it was 22' long x 9.2' wide, roughly the size of a 21-23' center console...and they towed that 340 miles through the North Atlantic. I know it was on its little floating pad or whatever, but that's a long way in rough seas for something that small. Carbon fiber isn't made for that kind of beating, not to mention the stresses from repeated dives.
