I agree with the point Dabo was trying to make:

Oct 23, 2013, 11:27 AM

FSU, coming off a bye week, played about as perfect a game as a football team can. That's a fact.

Clemson played easily our collectively worst game since the Orange Bowl. That's also a fact.

You don't win games when you fumble on the first play from scrimmage, spot them 14 points off the bat, and cough up the ball like 3 more times.

That game was not indicative of where we are relative to FSU as a team or a program. That was his point.

Having said that, if we played them this year 10 times, we'd win 3 probably...

If Dabo said everything you just said... minus the last line

Oct 23, 2013, 11:29 AM

then most of us would not have a problem at all.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He did say:

Oct 23, 2013, 11:33 AM

“That’s not taking anything away from them; they played a heck of a game, and we certainly didn’t give ourselves a chance. We didn’t give our fans a chance.”

“You can’t make those mistakes and even really assess it as far as where you are competitively,” Swinney said. “(FSU’s) got a couple of areas where they’re a little bit ahead of us that I think we’re going to catch up. But I think we’re pretty evenly matched football teams.”

and

“We didn’t play well, it didn’t go our way. But they’re not that much better than us, and we certainly ain’t that bad of a football team. There’s no doubt about that.”

He didn't just say "5 out of 10" and walk away from the mic. People need to read things in context. As for the 5 of 10, do we really want a coach who says "Awww we suck, they're gonna kick our ##### every time we play..." NO! If he said something like that everyone would be complaining about that just as much.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hey. It's coach speak

Oct 23, 2013, 11:36 AM

And while I don't like it, I'm not upset over it.

But that said, there is no practical reason to throw out the 5 of 10 line. It says nothing of substance, and in fact it comes across as belittling FSU. Like I said before, we all say stupid things sometimes, and in this case Dabo just let himself get carried away.

I certainly don't think he should have said they would beat

Oct 23, 2013, 11:38 AM [ in reply to He did say: ]

us 10 out of 10, or 9... or whatever. My whole point is he shouldn't have said anything like that. Just leave it out. I'm not calling for the guys job, or questioning his intelligence. I'm saying it is ridiculous to defend that statement, because it was obviously stupid.

I understand the context, and agree with much of it. I am not suggesting he should insult our team or anything of the sort. Just don't make dumb@ss comments like the 5 out of 10 thing.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To me, it didn't sound bad in context. But then again

Oct 23, 2013, 11:39 AM

I generally don't think even guys like Spurrier sound that bad in context.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well as long as you are consistent.***

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We hang on to every single word that these coaches say.

Oct 23, 2013, 11:53 AM

I understand that's why they are paid well, but these guys speak to the media so much and get asked question after question. Unless you're just a jackhole and don't respond, it's easy to say something that maybe you meant in a different way but someone else takes it differently.

I just think we way overanalyze irrelevant stuff. What any coach says at a press conference is vastly different than behind close doors.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point, but I think it would be a good thing if Dabo

Oct 23, 2013, 11:56 AM

practiced shortening his responses.

Sorta like that commercial when the car horn reminds that guy to stop embarrassing himself. :)

Just have Tim Bourret with a bike horn nearby.

What does it matter what Dabo believes about HIS team?

Oct 23, 2013, 11:35 AM [ in reply to If Dabo said everything you just said... minus the last line ]

I mean these clowns here in Columbia carried on about it on the radio yesterday. My wife laughed and asked "Why does it bother them what he thinks. Why are they even talking about it. If he believes it then good for him." I told her she was spot on. I don't give a rip what others think. Besides, there are MORE IMPORTANT matters like beating Maryland on Saturday.

Re: What does it matter what Dabo believes about HIS team?

Oct 23, 2013, 11:40 AM

Well I can't speak for others, but I don't care what the coots think. But I care what the nation thinks of our program. We want positive exposure. We are not happy when we have negative exposure. We can't pretend, because it sounds cool, that we don't care. We want people to respect Clemson because that is a prerequisite for ultimate success.

Out of touch comments open our program for ridicule. What's wrong with wanting to minimize those?

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it was Dabo being Dabo. He has faith. He believes in

Oct 23, 2013, 11:44 AM

things unseen. I say just keep winning. 6-1 to 12-1 would be a great way to respond to any who question what he believes in. Obviously we will not be able to see if what he believes is true until late December or early January. The perspective of faith or believing in things unseen is a key to understanding Dabo.

I hear what you're saying, but I wonder if all that faith contributed to our last loss at home. Faith can open up people to massive blind spots if they are not careful.

Some people seem to think Dabo should've said

Oct 23, 2013, 11:37 AM

"We are just not close to the same level as FSU. If we played FSU 10 times, heck I wouldn't be surprised if they won all 10."

That would've been brilliant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most of us just wish he had the common since to

Oct 23, 2013, 11:55 AM

bring up the subject of what would happen if we played 10 times. My god, if you just got " it" handed to you, why would you start that conversation?
Guess he was defensive about giving up the largest number of points in DV ever!

Yeah he just shouldn't have said anything, but Dabo's our main cheerleader. I do think instead of being a cheerleader type coach, he should be more of a drill sargent type. We got our butts whipped.
