I agree that Chad Morris' system is old news, &running game

Nov 8, 2013, 9:19 AM

is what many teams need more of..including Clemson.

IMO, Stanford proved that last night against an Oregon team that is very much like Clemson offensively..stronger at QB & WR positions..but a little down at RB. Plus, I love a grind it out running game with a big bruising FB & CJ type half-back.

GoTiGERs!

Dabo and his staff are darn good recruiters....

Nov 8, 2013, 9:24 AM

but it they seem to have one shortfall, it is recruiting along the OL and DL.

It is more difficult to find good o-linemen that want to

play in our style of offense. For one, it doesn't do as much to prepare them for the NFL.

Let's see how well Ogundeko, Maverick Morris, Pagano,

or even big guy Oliver Jones, etc., are before we say we aren't improving our line on both sides. It may be gradual, but some of the newer guys like Lawson are already proving we are taking steps forward.

DL? We have a great DL and have put many in the NFL***

the OL in a major way, not so much in regards to the DL.

Clemson has done very well with DL, but there are very little quality OL in the state of South Carolina year in and year out. Just look at all the DL talent the state has in the NFL then look at the OL talent maybe two..... Clemson has to go out of state to get great OL.. I don't know if it is coaching on the HS level or what but this state just doesn't produce very good OL.

Don't think Bama or Stanford recruit guys like Mariota or Tajh

They fit in the Oregon and Clemson scheme and do it well

That is great for Oregon and Clemson so they get crazy athletes who can throw and break all kinds of records

Big time receivers are more likely to go to Oregon and Clemson etc even though Bama gets good ones too

The problem is in the linemen. How many 4 and 5 start RB, WR, QBs does Clemson get? Plenty

How many big tough 4 and 5 start linemen come to Clemson year in year out over the last 5-8 years?

That gets Clemson to 10-2 with blow out wins over the ACC but losses to better top 15 teams

That gets Oregon blow out wins and lots of press until they play a tough top 10 team with tougher lines.

Linemen want to go where they pound the ball, athletes want to go where they can toss it around

Simple, different philosophies but each have their benefits

I have not acturally checked, but I don't think Stanford has

all 4 and 5 star OL. further, star ratings are probably least accurate when evaluating OL. Clemson has actually had quite a few 4 star players at that position however some of our better players have been lower rated by the experts out of high school. Development and mentality are the most important aspects of OL. You certainly need the physical attributes to be good but I think development by the coaching staff and having a nasty streak are key. We are really missing that legit running back. Dabo made some mistakes in recruiting Gurley and marshal and it probably set us back. I think Tyshon (sp?) may give us that dominant running game next year.

What Clemson Needs Is

a more talented offensive line. The commitment of the coaching staff to running the game is there most of the time but Mr. Morris does not have the confidence in the OL to accomplish this desire.

Last night displayed the positive and negatives of being one dimensional as a football team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I still say we need to wait and see how the newest recruits

Nov 8, 2013, 10:09 AM

improve or don't improve our line. Ogundeko, Battle, Maverick Morris, Boulware, big guy (not so highly rated) Oliver Jones, etc. Morris may be using the shotgun approach bringing in a number of newer linemen and setting up some competition to find the best for positions to develop further.

Every team can't play like that.... Stanford has more than great OL and DL... They have very good LB and DB's... Clemson plays a style that has them winning 10 plus games a year. They could go back to the smash mouth football and they would win maybe 6-7 games a year.

Re: I agree that Chad Morris' system is old news, &running game

Nov 8, 2013, 10:58 AM

If Clemson ran a line up and run style of offense the everyone would be crying that we need more speed and more spread passing offense just like a few years ago. I think that the style and system we have now gives Clemson the best chance to win the most games based off of the players they have the ability to get. Clemson is never going to be able to recruit a whole line of 5 star players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you want a style that will beast Oregon and

Nov 8, 2013, 10:30 AM

lose to Utah? Stanford is not a team that plays well from behind because of their style.

Re: I agree that Chad Morris' system is old news, &running game

Nov 8, 2013, 10:56 AM

Totally agree Bill! I've said all along that Dabo wants to recruit the best skill positions, which he has done very well, but we are lacking in recruiting and developing O-line prospects to my satisfaction, which of course, makes me a "coot", LOL. Danny knew, as does Shaw, Saban, Meyer, Fisher and yes, Spurrier, that games are won or lost in the trenches!

Re: I agree that Chad Morris' system is old news, &running game

Nov 8, 2013, 11:06 AM

Dabo wants to recruit players that don't have off the field issues and cause a lot of problems for the program. Those coaches, with the exception of shaw, may be able to get some "physical" players but look at all those coaches and they all have or had issues with players off he field. Clemson has to decide where they want a team of thugs with a good line and physical play or a team that some deem not very physical with a mediocre line but still wins 10-11 games ever year. There are positives and downsides to both styles but as long as we have our current staff we will may not win a NC but we'll win 10-12 games a year and the program will stay clean while doing it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not going to call you a coot.

Nov 8, 2013, 11:36 AM [ in reply to Re: I agree that Chad Morris' system is old news, &running game ]

We've gotten better and better on the lines every year.

I have to admit...

Nov 8, 2013, 11:34 AM

there's a special place in my heart for a team that runs for 4 yards in a cloud of dust.
