between Columbia and Sumter at the Union Camp Paper Mill for Fluor. We had to get out of dodge so to speak. Came up to the upstate for the weekend.
I think it hit Charleston on Thursday and headed inland to Sumter, then turned north toward Charlotte doing a lot of damage along the way. You could see trees down everywhere from the midlands to the coast for a long time.

Was living in Charlotte then and it really did some damage up here. My very elderly grandparents didn’t have power for 11 days 😳

We had just moved to SC literally that day. I remember my parent worrying about all our stuff as most were still in the moving truck or in boxes in the house.

11 pine trees knocked down at my house. It was my first semester but had to drive home and get out the chain saw and help clean up. No power for several days.

downed trees and used our boat generator to watch TV reports.
When I heard Rock Hill was hit hard, I drove to my parents' home and was stunned to see the damage across the city. My folks had large pine trees down across their yard, roof and a car, no power and no ice, so I called up some help out of Columbia to bring large chainsaws and coolers full of ice. That gang had the yard cleared in one day!
My Mother said they rode out the storm in a ground floor, interior bathroom, and when I asked what they had with them, she said, "Water, flashlights, some snacks...and an ax!" When I asked why the ax, she said, "So we could chop our way out, if necessary!" LOL

In 2006 I was in Watauga County, NC (north west of Boone) walking a ~ 500+ acre property. Was on both sides of a mountain ridge (southeast and northwest faces). The southeast face had huge, what looked like old growth forest trees laying on the forest floor. These tress were huge and covered the floor so much you had to climb over or reroute. Thing is they weren't cut they seemed pushed over because of the holes near the bases.
Ran into a local guy who managed a lot of land around there, what happened? He said son, "Hugo"! That storm was unlike anything the Carolinas has seen in a long time.

I was living in mt pleasant. Had just graduated a year earlier, so I went back to Clemson and stayed with friends. Next day foolishly went back to the destruction. Spent the next two weeks living in st Stephens with work friends, eating all the deer meat they had stored in their freezers.

We had recently built a two story home in Mt. Pleasant. The contractor that I hired to clear the lot in preparation for construction suggested that he rmove the many very tall pine trees. I replied that the beautiful pines were the reson we bnought the lot.
Along came Hugo and we had 23 pine trees down with many leaning against our new home. Lesson: pay attention to people that know more than you.
