How to stop #2 and #6

Apr 26, 2012, 1:52 AM

After watching some highlights from last year I noticed that Sammy was able to tear apart the zone defense. At some point you are going to have to just keep your best DB on Sammy because of his big play ability.

On the other hand you have Nuk who has put on muscule and gained speed. He was already a solid and dependable receiver but now has the ability to have the yards after the catch.

How would you cover those two and not to mention the rest of the receiver we have?

Do you stick to a zone and put a man personally on Sammy? Run a man coverage or press man coverage and hope and pray Sammy and Nuk don't smoke both your CB's and Safetys?

What type of defenses do you think we will see?

Realistically you do one of two things which worked for the opposing teams in clemsons 4 losses. 1) you blitz 6 or 7 get quick pressure and make tajh make a bad decisions. 2) you send 3 or 4 disrespect the run game and tajhs running ability and cover the whole field with zones. (Gt did this with great pressure from just 3 linemen at times, Nc St's de owned the tackles and we all saw how Scar got pressure with just 4).

Now this year if im correct in my thought process. I think Clemson will face a ton of overload blitzes on 1st 2nd and 3rd and shorts b/c the pistol formation will greatly benefit guys like AE and Dj howard who like to see the play develoo and cut back into a lane if need be. Teams will have to respect the run game so 8 guys dropping back into zone will not be as effective.

Well last year from the games I attended and watched we saw a mixture of man and zone. If the CB's couldn't athletically match Sammy or Nuk we saw more zone. If the defense had pretty good corners we saw man on the outside (or where ever Sammy was) with some zone over the middle or pure man. VT had Sammy's number the first game but the defense played lights out. As already mentioned GT exposed our pass protection and sent some heat forcing Boyd into a bad situation. I think with the o-line being a " weakness" this year we are going to see more teams send 5-7 people on 2nd or 3rd and long. The key is our defense. We have enough playmakers to get out of a hole. We just don't have a team capable of getting down 2-3 scores and making a late comeback. If we can stay within striking distance there isn't a team on our schedule that is top to bottom better than us.

I agree with alot of what you say but GT did not blitz much they droped 6-7 guys and sent 3-4 sometimes 5. Lt is a huge concern in my eyes Thomas had better get better or Tajh may not get to see the field every game. I played Oline and last years oline had my blood boiling only two of them showed heart and pride all season. As a unit they shoulda been pissed and too full of pride to allow teams to send 3 or 4 and get to THEIR QB!

Only a "Saints Defense" can stop them.

But you don't have to stop them. You just have to make sure the ball never gets to them.

The best pass defense is pressure on the QB

Apr 26, 2012, 8:52 AM

that's been true for years and years.

When you get pressure on the QB, he makes mistakes and rushes throws. That's true even in the NFL.

the best DBs can't typically stay with the best wide outs for long at all. But the better the defensive line, the better the defense.

Then you start focusing on the WR's too much...

It takes away from Safety and CB blitzing. It may also leaves the LB's hanging further out for WR support.

If our OL can hold, we should be able to bust it big through the middle with AE23 and Bellamy.
