How to make rice.

Mar 15, 2022, 12:15 PM

This is the best way to make rice with no guessing or measuring. Easy and perfect every time.
You don't need a rice cooker or anything like that.

1. Put rice in pot. Add water until it covers the rice. swirl it a bit. If water is cloudy, and it probably is, you need to wash and/or rinse until water is clear.

2. Add water until it is about an inch above the rice. Use your pointy finger to measure - if you just touch the rice the water should come up to your first knuckle. If you are making brown rice, add a bit more water.

3. Add salt. To measure, pour it in your hand till you have the right amount. That's the right amount.

4. Turn on high heat and bring to boil. Cover to speed up this part if you want.

5. When water boils, remove lid. Keep an eye on the water level and keep boiling.

6. When water level is right at the top of rice, turn off of heat and cover. Don't peek. Wait 30 minutes. Uncover and enjoy.

You can make rice by measuring and timing, but that's not the way. This is the way.

I have nothing more to add.

Pretty funny dude but he mixes in how to cook rice properly often. He washes and uses the finger to measure as well. And of course, rice cooker

Short grained rice (like sushi rice) needs to be rinsed before cooking.

Rice is one of the 1st things I learned to cook as a youngun

Mar 15, 2022, 1:17 PM

being a Lowcountry SC "kin to the Chinese" family, we had rice at every meal. EVERY meal. My mom made a pot of rice like she made coffee in the AM. Always a pot of rice on the stove in case we wanted a snack during the day, that's what we had - something on rice. Rice is still in the Top 5 of my favorite foods.

Having said that with decades of experience making rice, the "boil-in bag" freaking rules. Great invention. Takes all guesswork out of the routine. Cleanup too.

Rice is great if you're really hungry and want to eat

My aunt used to make rice the way you make pasta: Boil until tender and then strain. That's hella weird to me.

Also, the trick to making corn on the cob is you bring a pot of water to a boil, throw the corns in, return to a boil, turn off heat, and cover. Corns will not overcook and will stay hot for hours. This is the way.

Boiling eggs...

Mar 15, 2022, 1:39 PM [ in reply to Rice is great if you're really hungry and want to eat ]

Put eggs in sauce pan. Cover with water by 1 inch. Bring to boil. Remove from heat. Cover with lid. Prepare an ice bath. Remove eggs when they are cooked to your liking (4-6 minutes for soft boiled and 8-10 for hard boiled) and place them in cold water for 10 minutes.

Cold water stops them cooking and also causes the egg to contract away from the shell.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If eggs float to the top, toss 'em.***
