Recruiting and our road to a Championship

May 14, 2014, 2:22 PM

I looked up the recruiting rankings of all the BCS champions over the two years prior to their championship. There is a stronger correlation than I thought. Every team that has won the BCS title since it began 15 years ago has finished in the top-10 of the recruiting rankings in one of the two years prior to their title. Not surprising. But with only one exception, the BCS champion has also finished with an average recruiting class that was in the top-5 over those two years combined. The only exception is Auburn, which is explained by the fact that many of the players on their Championship team - including their two best players (Nick Fairley, Cam Newton) - were junior college transfers that didn't get counted in the recruiting numbers.

Elite level recruiting isn't sufficient on its own to win a championship, but so far it has certainly been necessary. Dabo has done a great job with recruiting and the next class looks like it could be his best yet. Our two-year average has been between #6 and #11 since he took over. That's very good, but this next recruiting class could be a big step in getting us to the next level.

Clemson improved even more in recruiting with the addition of coach v and reed. These two really know how to evaluate talent beyond star ratings.

How many scholarships do we have left?

There are still a few dozen who have us on their list. At this rate, we may have to turn a few away. Once offers are made, are they up for grabs until the last one is taken?
