For all of you we should use the portal more folks, do you also mean that we should tamper with players before they are in the portal and get in bidding wars for talent.
Unless Dabo is going to that, which he isn’t, then the whole portal argument is a fallacy.
He is not going to pull a Kiffen and complain about those things while also doing the same things he is complaining about. Just not Dabos way of doing things.
When we were paying players under the table he did not have to know about any of that or participate in it. He would be in the middle of any tampering with a player before they are in the portal.
75% of the great portal players have a deal worked out before they leave.

We don’t lose any starters and we are not going to sit down a starter or kick him off the team just to use the portal, which is not moving anyone to great status.

several problems with that reasoning. First of all, are you saying starters are tenured and cannot lose their job? Also, this team does not have much depth. You need to be able to rotate in for freshness and in case of injuries. The d line is a Woods injury away from being non-existent.

Doesn’t mean we’ll be better because of it though. The portal isn’t a Walmart shelf of elite players. If we sign 10 players quitting their previous team, then maybe we’ll be lucky to hit on one or three.

So you think portal guys are the answer, even though nobody has changed their trajectory to great by virtue of the portal?
We don’t lose starters. We’ve lost exactly ONE starter to the portal.
We have the best player retention in the country. Starters aren’t leaving for bigger paychecks.
So, where would we put these allegedly elite portal players? Which starters would you like to sit down or kick off the team just for the sake of using the “magic” portal?
Again, if a team loses 10 guys to the portal every season, then they MUST use the portal. That’s not a certainty they’re getting better and in fact could net out worse. The elite have remained the elite, and no one has jumped on the great page just because they’re forced to use the portal.

We have seniors or juniors heading to the NFL so we do lose players.
As far as starters playing or sitting…be the better player at the position or find the bench.
Check out the landscape… portals guys include players at the D2 level and guys who fit your system. Guys WANTING to play for Clemson brand.

I had six players that I coached as youth football players play D1 football. Based on talking to their parents, we are in the 10% of power four teams that don’t tamper with players who have not even thought about going in the portal yet.

we are also not getting the talent through high school recruiting. A team who's recruiting ranks in the low-teens at best, combined with little to no transfers, is getting hit on 2 levels. Georgia is getting top 5 high school and filling holes with transfers. There were so many impactful transfers in the CFP teams last year. Ohio State had one of the top RB in all College football and went out and brought in another RB who was even better, who were both drafted in the top rounds this year

If he doesn't use the portal effectively, Clemson is going to be really bad next year and the years to come. We lose so many starters after this season and the talent has been regressing year after year.
Is it any shock our best defensive player is a portal player? Is it any shock when Tristan Smith touches the ball he plays hard? This isnt a coincidence. The guys who came here via high school are fat and happy it appears. I would rather have guys that are hungry then ones who are talented but not driven.

Anyone who told you that they thought Heist would outplay Parker and Woods before the season started is a revisionist. Plenty surprise but most people are shocked. Were talking about 2 top 7 draft pick projections.

I've been pulling for Dabo's plan to work. After this season with the amount of players leaving he doesn't have much of a choice.
This was kinda the make or break year for Dabo's no portal plan to work. It isn't working so I feel confident we will see 6-8 portal players next year.

Unless you think it is right to pull scholarships, The Portal is all about numbers. Portal usage at any school totally depends on how many scholarships are available.

When a Swinney is on scholarship or any coaches son is, that is unacceptable. You realize Syracuse's coach is on their team and he isnt on scholarship? There are plenty of players who are on scholarship that probably shouldn't be.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Kiffin. He's very direct about how the system works, and yes he tries to manipulate for his own benefit, but he has mastered how to thrive in the new world. Ole MIss gets virtually no 4* recruits out of HS, but his teams the last 4 years are rocking it. NFL draft picks abound. Offense design is top-tier. And he is winning 10+ games while playing in the SEC. For those who think the portal is about picking up quitters, he now has a D2 QB national champion who would be an upgrade at Clemson this year. Kiffin grabs these diamonds in the rough from non-power 5 schools because those kids are looking for a bigger stage. Who would think it's a bad idea to grab kids who worked extra hard to be better after being overlooked coming out of HS?

I do t think anyone is dismissing Kiffen. Kiffen constantly speaks about the cautions of the lack of control in todays game, but he also takes advantage of the same lack of control.

This logic doesn't follow.
Clemson just signed Will Heldt, Jeremiah Alexander and Tristan Smith from the portal. We didn't tamper with any of them and we didn't have to "win bidding wars" against teams with deeper pockets.
Will Heldt has been our best player on defense. Let's find more of him in the portal.
