Went to the Pizza Joint last night, so leftover devito sandwich. Basically flatbread (pizza dough) sandwich with pepperoni, ham, banana peppers, and cheese. Left off the lettuce and tomato cause re-heated lettuce and tomato is grosser than a cockmeat sandwich.

moving freely on a paved flat surface with no impediments vs unpaved elevated surfaces that are chock full of rocks, roots, downed trees, small streams to transverse, etc. In fact NOTHING can be run straight, lots of side to side movement when picking where to place your foot....every single step. There is also quite the cumulative effect over several miles of that.

Some of the uphill is so steep the pace drops to like barely being able to continue moving forward with every step. I'll run all the down hill, everything flat, and all of what I would consider gradual uphill. The steepshit gets walked.

It's also quite the mental grind when you literally can't look at ANYTHING other than staying laser focused on your next 2 steps. One mental blip and gravity (which I'm convinced pulls way harder up there) will suck you straight into said rocks and roots. Ask me how I know. I've taken I think 5 good spills up there this year so far.

2nd run after 5 weeks off due to an achilles situation, so still a bit off from levels I was at back in August.

The end.

1000 ft of elevation gain is like 100 stories on a building. It straightfucks your legs up, and you really don't get much relief nor pace gained coming back down....gotta be slow and methodical due to heavy legs and a half inch of laziness results in a real solid wad up into rocks and roots and that's no bueno.

during certain parts of the year.

STORY TIME:

Ran 15.5 up there back in July. Had a 1000ml nalgene of water. Ok let's back up. I drank a fair amount of tequila the night before, didn't sleep but maybe 6 hours, then drank a bunch of coffee before running.

Recipe for dehydration right? CORRECT. Perfect recipe.

Ok so start off behind the proverbial 8 ball with hydration. Get to going with my nalgene. And I am F'ing hurting for water. Total conservation mode until run out. Wasn't able to get water until mile 12.5.

In between I kept having to weewee. Like several times. Each time it burned and came out orange because dehydrated.

Finish up and sweatergod drank like 1.5 gallons of water and nearly a GD gallon of gatorlyte.

Then I get to weeweeing like a whole bunch more, because all that liquid. STILL BURNS LIKE A MF.

Then.....at the end of me weewee sesh, DROPS OF BLOOD ENTER THE CHAT ERRRRR TOILET. I'm like DAFUCK?

Continues to burn and blood drops at the end for like 10 days. Got so freaked out I went and got full panel STD tests because like ### else could it be. All clean. Burning stopped. Blood no mas.

Turns out after internetting it seems like what had happened was bladder trauma from empty bladder and 15.5 miles of running. Working theory is that it's normal for a tiny bit of blood to be in the bottom of your bladder but you don't ever actually empty it far enough to get to it so like you don't even know that. Seems as if mine was so empty it got to that point.

Did not enjoy, do not wreckormend. The end. I hope you enjoyed my story and have a great day today.

Offroad, unpaved trails are a whole different ballgame. I used to race harescrambles (and a few enduros) on those trails in middle school and HS, so I know the mentality and consistent focus it takes to stay upright.

My old ass is fine with flat pavement these days.

2025 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't mind a good 45 or 90 minute walk on pavement

in my hood. Do it probably 3x per week.

With running...I don't like running. At all. Lemme start there. Running on pavement around the hood is something I just can't/won't do. It's boring and I hate it so much it doesn't happen.

On the mountain is different. I think the mental engagement required is a challenge that keeps me going and allows me to run. In fact, although I don't love it I certainly don't mind it enough to go 2-3x per week.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the way I feel afterwards though.

It's a weird thing and 100% mental, but it is what it is.

It was like 67 degrees. No idea on humidity but not humid at all.

Elevation gain was 1059ft. Finished where I started, so I assume another 1059 of elevation lost? So 2118? Was that elevation delta? IDK.

Hope this helps with understanding caloric demand, whatever that is.

Ran on empty tummy other than 2 cups of black coffee because that's how I roll.

Does anyone remember a place around Anderson circa 1995-1996 that served a build your own baked potato casserole type thing. Basically, they had a pre-chopped baked potato in a tray, and they added whatever meats and toppings you wanted. I worked at the Bosch plant after Clemson classes around that time, and we would occasionally get meals from that restaurant. Always thought that would be a great food truck idea...
