Portal vs hs recruit

Dec 3, 2021, 6:59 PM

One of two things will need to happen to keep a competitive team.

1) recruit the portal
2) increase the hs scholarship offers.

My opinion is to offer the hs kids with scholarship opportunities early and often. The portal doesn’t have a high volume of game changer skill. So I think going forward the plan would need to be to get more offers out early and plan on recruiting for possible departures.

At this point we are behind in recruiting elite level talent this year because we haven’t offered kids that may have considered us. Hopefully next year the coaching staff will learn and adjust so that a better plan is in place.

We have gone from a 15 or 17 sized class to 25 or so recruits to fill out the roster and most of the big names have committed. Maybe we turn a few our way.

Go Tigers..

Just one guys opinion.

The Portal should be the last thing we do. The vast majority

of Transfer Portal players struggled at the school they signed with out of high school. It would be rare to see an All American coming out of a Transfer Portal.

You could probably get a starter! Nyles Pinckney for Minnesota comes to mind. Solid for the Gophers - but he was not a "game-changing type player"! Solid, but he was what he was and he likely thought he was more than just a role player! Not so much; but he served his time here and did great for Clemson. He went to Minnesota and played well for them. Wish him the best! He's just not a game changer!

He is what I suspect you get out the portal! Kids like LJD or Mikey Dukes who think they are better than they have been given the opportunity to display!
What's crazy is almost every coach in America is going to put any player on the field that can be a difference-maker on the field above anybody else! Joe Burrow was at LSwho for "how long" and Ohio St "how long" is a big exception one might bring up. But, he is an exception and was a 6th year player in a system and players around him that was lightning in a bottle!

Most are likely career back ups or players like Ladson - kids who never lived up to the hype who think a change of scenery will improve their play! *scoffs*

If planning on losing a % yearly; I like your plan! However, from a developmental standpoint, it will hurt a bunch.
Clemson, Bama, Ohio St, and perhaps Georgia soon will have 3-star kids they develop - who will get awesome offers because they are "a former Clemson player"! The same goes for higher-rated kids.

The stat of the day for me is: Since 2019 13K kids entered the portal and 11K never got picked up!

Hopefully, this starts to circulate and coaches/programs can get back to "developing their talent" for their own use - not some other team!

It's kind of like dating a person who: "always changes their mind or who gets bored easily"! If you pick up a transfer portal kid you have to wonder "how committed are they to you"? Because surely they told some other coach the same thing at some point.

How DARE YOU say the portal doesn't offer game changing

Dec 3, 2021, 7:08 PM

skill! I'll have you to know, most people on TNet seem to think everyone in the portal is a 10 STAR recruit! (Except the ones of ours that transfer out, those weren't any good.)

Has to be both.

The portal utilization MUST happen. You can’t constantly depend on freshman coming in to fill So./He’s spot on the roster. Some freshman are ready made but likely not enough to combat the transfers out of the program.

Dabo should’ve started portal use to an extent 2-3 years ago, glad now that his hand is forced and his “opinion” of transfers can no longer keep him from taking them.
