VT is showing how players will be handled as Pro's

VT cut player's NIL off after he voluntarily expressed interest in redshirting. Honestly, I don't blame them if player is healthy and just doesn't want to play. I guarantee the kid wants to just sit and get paid so he can transfer next season. He will likely use the HC firing as an excuse to transfer but wanted to ride the bench this year and still get paid.
Bottomline is there has to be a different set of rules for paid players vs student athletes. I am not nearly as ready to defend players who make money to work and education is secondary.
Virginia Tech stopped revenue share payments to player who expressed interest in redshirting, attorney says - CBSSports.com https://share.google/jNXjbQjj1KxGlCcN2

Agree 100%, and would fully support Clemson following suit with VT.

Perhaps a player should be deemed as ‘awful’ if his strength & conditioning metrics only increased by <2% from previous year to current year.
Expressed in qualitative terms, if the player is lazy.

You mean performance based like most jobs should be …well, since our staff agrees “We’ve completely failed as coaches” - the salaries our of coaches and their gang of merry men of friends and family should also take a financial hit ..”Money For Nothing” breeds complacency ..

and other teams would exploit the heck out of that in recruiting battles.

while it seems like a great idea it would easily handicap us in recruiting consequential players in the future.. "don't go to Clemson b/c they'll cut off your money in heartbeat."

is he actually playing? Im assuming so, but wondered who it is.
Good for VT but the attorney probably wins the case and they are forced to pay the player, etc. sadly.

Yep, just part of the transition process.

Universities have demonstrated over and over again that the purpose of a football "scholarship" is to make money for the university, and academics and graduation is optional and not essential. In fact universities have decided that when academics becomes a hindrance to making money they will change the rules on academic requirements so that it won't be a hindrance.
So, we are heading toward athletes being employees, unionizing and collectively bargaining benifits and responsibilities of the athletes.
It's just a messy transition.

This will be common. You don't get paid if you don't perform.
The only exception will be for women athletes. Congress is passing a law (The SAFE Act) to give them more protections than the football players.

Ultimately, pay will have to be based upon PERFORMANCE---just like the NFL. Not "potential". Performance.

I'd like to hear VTs side of this

According to the player's lawyer, he just reached out to the interim HC about the possibility of redshirting. According to the player he never said he was redshirting or transferring.
If thats truly what happened, I think the coach went too far. A player should be able to say "hey coach I'd like to talk to you about possibly redshirting" and expect to at least have an adult discussion about it.
There's likely more to the story that the player is leaving out here, but I think VT needs to provide some clarity. Right now it looks like the coach threw a tantrum and acted immaturely.

College football players or more likely those providing the NIL money are going to have to structure contracts just like I do in the business world. I spell out everything that I will do and will not do, how I will get paid, what happens if my work is terminated, what happens if I walk away from the project, what is my liability if my client sues me, etc. I try and get all of the things that cause arguments over with before the projects starts.

Probably need to clarify its his rev share, not NIL

I don't think the school has any control over NIL like that, I assume that would be up to the NIL check writer.
I think if players want to take their redshirt and sit until transfer then they should just be cut, like pros. No access to facilities and amenities. Not sure if that's how it works now but that's how I would approach it if I had any say.

I wonder if same thing happened with Shelton Lewis?
I know nothing about his situation.
But it could be that he said he wanted to red shirt, and we said OK we’re not gonna pay you, and he said OK I gotta go, and we said OK.
Again, I have no knowledge of his situation.
