Honestly, I am probbably in the minority...

Jul 31, 2023, 7:33 AM

... But I hope we do go to the Big10. I would rather go to the Big10 then the SEC to be honest. Other Clemson non-football sports may have a hard time with the travel budget but for football I think we will be alright. I would love to play Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State on a regular basis. I think this move would help us even more with recruiting. I am excited about this possible move, but then again, what do I know.

I would rather go to the Big10 than the SEC or stay in the ACC. With the addition of Clemson and FSU the Big10 would be just as strong from top to bottom as the SEC.

the only times we would play OCryo State would be in a conference championship game. Maybe we play them or Meechigan in the regular season once every five years or so. Kinda the way the current "powers" in the SEC only played the dregs of the other division for the most part for ad nauseum number of years. Anyone who thinks this practice does not continue, even without divisions, is delusional. ANY conference is wise to try and setup their best teams to have the best records possible in these revenue, TV ratings driven times.

One big negative for me is moving the conference championship game so far away. We really enjoy our annual trip to Charlotte. Geographically, the SEC just makes so much more sense, especially for those who like to go to away games. We made the trip to ND last year because it was a bucket list item for a couple of us but that was a brutal trip just to attend a game. I will admit it might have been better if we hadn’t got our butts kicked in the game and then returned home and immediately got sick with Covid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think my preference is to be in neither of those

2

Jul 31, 2023, 7:49 AM

I would like to be in a viable ACC or other conference, but if the trend toward a “big two” comes to fruition, I agree with you - I would take the B1G over the SEC.

I can hear our feathered little brothers and current SEC members now:
“If you can’t beat them, join them”
“Shut up, newbie”

Plus, if we joined the SEC, what would we all talk trash about? It would all be settled on the field, every year.

And I can certainly see why PF wouldn’t want us in the SEC; we are his favorite punching bag.

Yes, my preference would be for Clemson to be a founding member of the “Continental Conference”, made up of former ACC, PAC and B12 teams (and ND), and spanning coast to coast. East and West divisions to address geography, a 4-team playoff to determine a champ…

I went to harbor freight this morning and noticed a gas can labeled as 'Midwester.' I removed the cap off the can and saw one of the new funky spouts which leak.

I thought, they chose the right brand name.

BIG would be fine, the media wants someone from there to be in the title hunt, so we'd definitely get the ink. Just don't want to go to th eBig 12, or PAC 12 or any other 2nd/3rd tier conference.

At least IF the Tigers move to another conference we will be rid of the “patsys” on the schedule.

WHAT I would like to see is for all the ACC schools play two games per season against a major conference.

A working agreement like this could be a real positive for all the league teams.

A road game with Penn State and a home game against Michigan with the other games being league games as it is now would be a good, challenging season. Especially if we keep the annual game with “THEM”.

As an alum, I have always been proud of the academic standard of the ACC generally (cough, Louisville, cough cough).

The Big 10 maintains an academic standard. That still matters, in my opinion.

Plus, I get sick of the SEC love.

I'm fine with the Big 10 as long as they do set up 4 divisions with 6 teams in each division. They would need to take at least 4 other southern ACC schools (in addition to Clemson and FSU) and we would play those 5 schools in our pod each year along with 3 teams from a different pod. They could have a Southeast division, Northeast Division, Midwest Divison, and West Division (by taking a few more of the PAC12).

The ACC could do the same thing, but it would take some major poaching from the Big 12 in addition to the best of the remains of the Pac12.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maryland not exactly Southern, but we have history with them

3

although I can't stand them. I could see Maryland in our "pod" or "division" or whatever they want to call it.

At this point i don't care if they join the SEC or Big10, i think the time is right to join one of the two, i admit i would like to see matchups with the real USC, Michigan, OSU and others, but on the other hand, i can see a significant increase in ticket prices regardless of which way the Tigers go.

figure out a way to bridge the financial divide. I realize that's a pipe dream, but I still say we have some great programs and a great footprint. I just wish we could figure it out.

Failing that, I'd say SEC. I don't like either option, but I'll take the cultural and geographic fit of the SEC over the prestige of the B1G institutions. The B1G is just too far away...just too geographically and culturally disjointed. I do not respect this "coast to coast" thing they are doing.

Anyway, glad I don't have to make these choices.

So, who you got as a better top group from each surviving league if Clemson and F$U move. Big 10 would be Clemson, F$U, Southern Cal, Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Washington maybe Mich State and Wisconsin depending on the year.

SEC would be Alabama, Georgia, L$U, Oklahoma, A&M, Auburn, maybe Florida and Tenn depending on the year. Also, Texas if they can get Mac Brown to come back.

That's two almost even Super Conferences.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I respectfully disagree:

3

Jul 31, 2023, 10:44 AM

We are in the footprint of the SEC. We have nothing in common with the Big Ten. 90% of our players come from the SEC footprint. The travel costs for our teams to compete in the BigTen would be prohibitive. Parents of players want to see their children play in person. Unless we can somehow rid ourselves of the “grant of rights” the ACC will cease to be competitive. Joining the SEC is the only thing that makes sense, IMO.

This is pure speculation on my part but I think there was a time not too long ago where the SEC wanted to have a serious conversation with us and we kind of thumbed our noses at them. I don't think they are showing any interest in us now and the B1G is probably going to be our best alternative if we decide to go anywhere.

I do believe a change is going to be thrust upon us at some point and either we decide to control our own destiny or someone else will.

Re: Honestly, I am probbably in the minority...

Personally I think the Big10 rumor for Clemson is partly a head fake. The well connected sources are purposely leaking to the media as part of initiative to see if a Big10 vs SEC bidding war can be ignited. If the Big10 wants a footprint in the SE, then Sankey has to decide if the SEC should protect that turf. ESPN would likely be aligned in not wanting Fox/NBC to grab that viewership. The Big10 took a bigger shot grabbing the West Coast footprint after the SEC decided to incrementally expand further into the Southwest. Under Warren, the Big10 seemed to have the bolder view of a national super conference which said the SouthEast region would come next because the SEC had grabbed the best of the Southwest. Fox had to like it because they already have a Big12 media deal. However, Warren moved onto the Chicago Bears. Who knows if the Big10 wants to get into a bidding war with the SEC under the new conference commish.

B1G has more upside in getting anyone down our way. SEC could definitely sew things up in the SE but not sure their monetary gain would be all that much. I’m not saying that to down Clemson or FSU it’s just they already have all the tv sets in this part of the country.
