he had a gazillion #1 hits or albums. But he has toured relentlessly for decades. He's pretty much a solo artist with "backing band members", so he's not splitting all the money evenly with other band members. And he writes and composes almost all of his tunes, so he owns all of the publishing rights, royalties, etc. That's where a lot of folks screw up. Like Paul, who ended up having to buy back his own songs from Michael Jackson... via Sony, Apple, etc.
And he is apparently a very shrewd business man and dabbles in a ton of stuff. Real estate ventures, casinos, restaurant chains, beer, reefer, food, clothing lines... you name it. I'd guess his record sales and touring was just "seed money" for his other investments and businesses.

You can also include author in that list, he's written a couple of novels, a couple of children's books, and a couple of memoirs. His book A Pirate Looks At 50 gives a really good glimpse into who and what Jimmy Buffett is. It's a really good read. The two novels I've read, Where Is Joe Merchant and A Salty Piece Of Land, are both worth reading.

universal appeal of his music. It's non-threatening and stays in the middle lane. Your mom can listen to it and so can your daughter. And it has the crossover effect, country music people can listen to it, but they probably wouldn't care for Black Sabbath. You know what I mean.
The other thing is, his songs were part of the "soundtrack of our life" for people my age. I never owned any of his albums, but can sing along with most of his songs. You couldn't escape his music when AM radio/Top 40 dominated the airwaves. And every bar and pool hall at the beach played it. You heard it without even trying. I say the same thing about the Eagles. Not really my cup of tea, but you heard it everywhere you went. Couldn't avoid it.

Buffett is an excellent businessman and marketer.

Like his music or not, he figured out the business side and ran with it. The man churned out 6 great records in his early days proving his mettle as a songwriter. It's when he turned the corner with Volcano in 1979 to chase chart hits and develop the Parrothead lifestyle that he lost me a little. I'm still a fan, and consider A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean, Living and Dying in 3/4 Time, A1A, Havana Daydreamin', Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, and Son of a Son of a Sailor to be brilliant albums. Even High Cumberland Jubilee had some very good material on, albeit not as solid as an effort as the others of those early days. Buffett was a staple act at Carowinds back in my youth, he came every year as an acoustic act and with his full band, and always put on a great show. I guess I've seen him 5 or 6 times prior to 1980, and only once since. We were in NYC when he did a free show for Good Morning America when License to Chill came out in 2004, so I got up early and walked a few blocks down to see him. It was only around 10 songs, but a still a good show.

I've seen him live more times than I could accurately count, but only once or twice since the infernal "Parrothead" people ruined everything except Mr Buffett's wallet.
He deserves all the millions he has made, solely because of those first 6 amazing records.

DAC has a song about Key West

"There's sailboats, and conch shells, and palm trees galore. But Jimmy Buffet doesn't live in Key West any more"
I think that's about the time he started honing that business acumen, an later opening restaurants, hotels and senior living communities.

plagiarizing the melody of Coe's Divers Do It Deeper from Buffett's Changes in Lattitude. The story goes that Buffett said he would have sued him, but he wasn't going to give Coe the pleasure of seeing his name in the paper. Coe answered with that song.

He's also the only artist I've ever seen live where I truly feared for my safety. He managed to attract the absolute worst elements of humanity into one small space anytime he played. That said, he's also not the most cultured guy in the music business. He actually lived the outlaw lifestyle he sang about. REALLY lived it.

A lot of musicians try to do it, like Kenny Rogers and the chicken restaurants. But Jimmy Buffett has played musical tycoon far better than he ever played beach bum. Live a lifestyle, sing about it. Promote it. Sell it. Profit. Forget about the lifestyle you promote and used to live because you don't anymore.

Kenny Chesney has picked up that challenge and ran with it though.
