226 - Duane Coleman Rushed 226 Times for Clemson Before Moving to DB

Sometimes you never know how a career will go. Duane Coleman carried the ball 226 times for Clemson – including leading Clemson in rushing as a freshman in 2003. But two games into his junior year he requested moving to defense.

From ClemsonTigers.com:

The 2003 season, his first season of eligibility, proved to be Coleman’s breakout year. He rushed for 615 yards and became the leading rusher on a Clemson team that won nine games and finished ranked in the top 25 of both polls.

In addition to his success running the football, Coleman established himself as a reliable receiver out of the backfield. He was the fourth-leading receiver on the team with 34 catches for 309 yards, an accomplishment that left a place in the history books. Coleman’s 34 catches were the second-most receptions in a season by a Tiger running back. Coleman helped the Tigers to a Peach Bowl victory against #6 Tennessee. He had four receptions and an eight-yard run on an option pitch for a touchdown. By the end of the season, Coleman was eighth in the ACC in rushing, 17th in total offense, and 25th in receiving.

He finished the season with 615 yards rushing and 309 receiving, joining Travis Zachery as the only players in Clemson history to record at least 600 yards rushing and 300 yards receiving in the same year. While Coleman had a solid 2003 season, the 2004 season would come to be one plagued with injuries. During a preseason practice, he broke his foot.

Although injuries clouded his 2004 season, Coleman was still able to contribute. He played in nine games, including two as a starter against Virginia and Utah State. He was second on the team in rushing with 284 yards.

The 2005 season was just as eventful as his previous two seasons. He entered the season as a running back, and one with two years of experience at the position. But during the first two games, he saw limited playing time.

“So I talked to Coach (Vic) Koenning on the plane and asked if the defense needed me, and he thought it was a joke. The next thing I know I had another jersey in my locker that Monday, which signified that I was going to be on defense, so everything turned out for the best.”

During the 2005 Miami game, Coleman made his defensive debut. He played eight snaps and had one tackle. The following game against Boston College, he played 19 snaps and had four tackles. He had three tackles, including a caused fumble, to help lead the Tigers to victory against N.C. State.

Virginia State Route 226, known as Cox Road, runs 3.38 miles from U.S. Route 460 near Sutherland east to U.S. 1 near Petersburg.

The Twelve Mile Recreation Area is a city of Clemson Park on Hwy 133 just out of town at almost the northern tip of Lake Hartwell. It has a beach, a boat ramp, a playground, and a picnic area. Back in the 70s and 80s, we used to call it the mudhole as it was just a place to pull off the road and go swimming. The park was built in the 90s. It's open from April 1 through September 6am to 10pm and costs $5 to park.

Nice place for family outings. I showed it to my son when he first got to Clemson. He and some friends have been there a few times. Then he found out about east bank by the rowing center, and they would hang out there on the docks.
Man I miss Clemson!!!

In the early 80's, we used to hang out and drink at east bank long before there was a rowing team. They had a shower house and bathrooms where the rowing boat house is now. I'm sure I blew many a test because of east bank.

kind of across the lake and down a little from the Y Beach. Don't think I ever went out there though; in fact, I don't even remember how you get out there. Heard others talk about it though.

growing in an aqueduct on the side of the Appian Way could tell you, The Year of the Consulship of Severus and Marcellus.

An event happened 226 years ago, in 1798, which just proves how history can be lost, and then repeat itself again. Eli Whitney, who five years earlier had invented the cotton gin, got a contract from the US Govennment for 10,000 rifles, to be built with INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS! This was considered to be a big deal, being able to swap parts from one gun to another. Could things really be manufactured that uniformly?

But in reality, evidence of the use of interchangeable parts can be traced back over two thousand years to Carthage in the First Punic War. Carthaginian ships had standardized, interchangeable parts that even came with assembly instructions akin to "tab A into slot B" marked on them.

But, back to 1798. Before the 18th century, devices such as guns were made one at a time by gunsmiths in a unique manner. If one single component of a firearm needed a replacement, the entire firearm either had to be sent to an expert gunsmith for custom repairs, or discarded and replaced by another firearm. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the idea of replacing these methods with a system of interchangeable manufacture was gradually developed. The development took decades and involved many people, including Eli Whitney. Successful implementation of the idea eluded Whitney until near the end of his life, occurring first in others' armories. And all this time, I thought he just invented a cotton gin.
